Spring 2014 Anime Awards

Welcome to my Spring 2014 Anime Awards, where I hand out meaningless accolades to the anime series I have watched in the aforementioned season. Each category will have a winner and some of my thoughts on that, and then runners-up.
As for the anime I watched in this particular season:

  • Blade & Soul
  • Fairy Tail (2014)
  • Inugami-san to Nekoyama-san
  • Is the Order a Rabbit?
  • JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders
  • Magica Wars
  • Riddle Story of Devil
  • selector infected WIXOSS
  • Soul Eater Not!

Naturally, be wary of potential spoilers. Now, let’s get straight into this.

Best Opening Theme
“Soushou Innocence” by Maayu Uchida
Riddle Story of Devil‘s opening theme. It’s great, and I don’t really have much more to say.
Runners-up: “STAND PROUD” by Jin Hashimoto (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders); “killy killy JOKER” by Kanon Wakeshima (selector infected WIXOSS)

Best Plot
selector infected WIXOSS
Girls playing card games to get their wish granted. However, there is more to the card game, and the consequences of losing three times are dire. The darkest show I’ve watched this season has the best plot.
Runners-up: Riddle Story of Devil, Soul Eater Not!

Best Main Character
Tokaku Azuma
From Riddle Story of Devil, Tokaku swears to protect Haru Ichinose from the assassins of the Black Class, and is certainly capable of holding her own in a fight.
Runners-up: Jotaru Kujo (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders); Tsugumi Harudori (Soul Eater Not!)

Best Antagonist
Sumireko Hanabusa
Riddle Story of Devil has a whole host of enemies to choose from, but Sumireko is my personal favourite. After all, she is pretty much a cyborg and gave Tokaku a hard time.
Runners-up: Shaula Gorgon (Soul Eater Not!); Jin Varrel (Blade & Soul)

Best Cast of Characters
Riddle Story of Devil
A class consisting of thirteen female assassins who are all capable of handling themselves in a fight. Sounds good to me.
Runners-up: Fairy Tail, Soul Eater Not!

Cutest Character
Ruko’s LRIG in selector infected WIXOSS. She loves nothing more than to battle, and forms a strong bond with Ruko.
Runners-up: Chino Kafuu (Is the Order a Rabbit?); Meme Tatane (Soul Eater Not!)

Most Badass Character
Tokaku Azuma
Since she decides to defend Haru from the assassins of Class Black, she is drawn into several fights. Her motivation is Haru’s protection, and she will fight to ensure that Haru survives.
Runners-up: Jotaro Kujo (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders); Gajeel Redfox (Fairy Tail)

Best Couple
Tokaku Azuma & Haru Ichinose
The main characters from Riddle Story of Devil get this award. They shared a kiss on-screen (albeit one that was underwater and probably required for Tokaku to live…), and Tokaku’s feelings are the reason she defends Haru.
Special mention goes to Soul Eater Not!‘s Tsugumi, Meme and Anya. Tsugumi chose both Meme and Anya as her partners, and that made me incredibly happy. Of course, three is more than a couple, but this is the only place this really fits…
Runners-up: Yachiyo Inugami & Suzu Nekoyama (Inugami-san to Nekoyama-san); Cocoa Hoto & Chiya Ujimatsu (Is the Order a Rabbit?)

Best Battle
Tokaku Azuma & Haru Ichinose vs. Sumireko Hanabusa
Sumireko is the ninth assassin to go after Haru in Riddle Story of Devil. The battle involves puppets of former Class Black Students, a healthy supply of firearms and Sumireko revealing she is a cyborg.
Runners-up: Tsugumi Harudori, Meme Tatane & Anya Hepburn vs. Shaula Gorgon (Soul Eater Not!); Jotaro Kujo & Star Platinum vs. Zii Zii & Wheel of Fortune (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders)

Best Powers
In JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders, Stands are probably best described as spirits that certain people have watching over them. Powers include, but are not limited to: speed, spirit photography, fire, so on and so forth.
Runners-up: Magic (Fairy Tail); Soul Resonance (Soul Eater Not!)

Best Transformation
Iron Shadow Dragon
Gajeel from Fairy Tail employs this transformation in his fight against Rogue. He consumes Rogue’s shadows in order to take on a more powerful form, taking inspiration from Natsu’s Lightning Fire Dragon form.
Runners-up: Magical Girl (Magica Wars); Weapon Transformation (Soul Eater Not!)

Best Soundtrack
Fairy Tail
Say what you like about long running shonen series, but they always seem to pull of pretty damn good soundtracks. This incarnation Fairy Tail is no exception.
Runners-up: Soul Eater Not!; JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders

Best Finale
Class Black Graduation
Ah, Riddle Story of Devil‘s ending. Haru gets to end up with Tokaku, even after being stabbed by her. Of course, that was so Tokaku could prove that she wasn’t being manipulated by Haru’s Primer. As for everyone else, well, they managed to survive. Does that ruin anything about Riddle Story of Devil? No, no it does not.
Runners-up: Iona’s wish (selector infected WIXOSS); Rescuing Meme from Shaula Gorgon (Soul Eater Not!)

Best Ending Theme
“Inochi no Karakuri” by Miho Arakawa
So, Riddle Story of Devil has 12 different ending themes, giving it a distinct advantage in this category… anyway, this ending theme is used for Sumireko’s episode. The others are all pretty damn good, but this is my winner.
Runners-up:”Concentration” by Manami Numakura (Riddle Story of Devil); “Dotte Kato Nai Sympathy” by Fumiko Uchimura (Riddle Story of Devil)

Best Anime
Riddle Story of Devil
So one anime managed to dominate my pointless awards again. Of course, I loved Riddle Story of Devil from beginning to end. Soul Eater Not! and selector infected WIXOSS are both worth mentioning as well.

Well, that’s it for this season. Sure, I gave Soul Eater Not! a higher review score than Riddle Story of Devil, but I personally really enjoyed the latter. Anyway, see you all again at the end of next season, where I hope to see more variety…
