There’ll potentially be spoilers for the shows listed above. With that said and done, I present my Spring Anime Awards.Best Opening Theme
“Venus Line” by Kohmi Hirose

Lots of great opening themes this season, but the one that stands out most in my mind comes from BIRDIE WING -Golf Girls’ Story. Sung by Kohmi Hirose, who also has another fairly famous song called “promise” – one that might be better known as “Get Down”. Yes, that song. BIRDIE WING‘s opening theme has managed to just stay firmly in my head throughout the entire season; I’m just glad its a great song.
Runners-up: “ASEED” by ZAQ (Black Rock Shooter Dawn Fall); “Paper Bouquet” by Mili (The Executioner and Her Way of Life)

Best Plot
Finding a way to kill the unkillable
Menou and Momo on a boatMenou is an Executioner who eliminates those who are transported into their world to prevent disasters from occurring. One such Lost One is Akari, who happens to be able to manipulate the flow of time. Which also makes it impossible to kill her, so Menou sets off on a journey together with Akari to carry out her task. Whilst falling for Akari…
Runners-up: Feelings blooming between two golfing girls (BIRDIE WING -Golf Girls’ Story); Finding new homes for clients (RPG Real Estate)

Best Protagonist
Menou
MenouThe lead character of The Executioner and Her Way of Life may not possess the greatest strength, but she is undoubtedly skilled when it comes to combat. She makes use of the skills she has to gain the upper hand during any fight, by any means necessary. She is also convinced that she will become a villain, but there’s definitely a softer side emerging as she spends more and more time around Akari.
Runners-up: Kotone (RPG Real Estate); Yuko Yoshida (The Demon Girl Next Door Season 2)

Best Antagonist
Pandæmonium
PandæmoniumOne of the four Human Errors in The Executioner and Her Way of Life, Pandæmonium is the origin of all monsters in that world. Her introduction into the story also happens to be one of the most gruesome things the anime has to offer, and it is absolutely superb. She is nigh immortal, which means she can be subject to all kinds of body horror – and she is an enemy that Menou must overcome.
Runners-up: Lunatic (Black Rock Shooter Dawn Fall); Orwell (The Executioner and Her Way of Life)

Best Female Character
MomoMomoSo many great female characters this season, but one who stands head and shoulders above the rest for me is Menou’s aide, Momo, from The Executioner and Her Way of Life. Momo is in love with Menou, and will loyally do anything for her. She doesn’t shy away from taking a more brutal approach, either.
Runners-up: Momo Chiyoda (The Demon Girl Next Door Season 2), Rina Tennouji (Love Live! Nijigasaki High School Idol Club Season 2)

Best Male Character
The Colonel
The ColonelFrom Black Rock Shooter Dawn Fall, the Colonel can be a bit rough. However, he is dedicated to fighting for humanity’s sake, and someone’s gotta take the lead whilst Empress fights foes that normal humans have no hope of overcoming.
Runners-up: Ulula (ESTAB LIFE: Great Escape); Alga (ESTAB LIFE: Great Escape)

Best Cast of Characters
Nijigasaki High School Idol Club
Nijigasaki High School Idol ClubThe girls from Love Live! Nijigasaki High School Idol Club are all great, and the second season brought even more into the mix. And immediately made them more likeable than their first appearances in the Love Live! All Star mobile game, so that was definitely a win.
Runners-up: RPG Real Estate ladies; Yuko’s family and friends (The Demon Girl Next Door Season 2)

Cutest Character
Fa
FaNow this was a tough choice. It was between Yuurei-chan from Miss Shachiku and the Little Baby Ghost and Fa from RPG Real Estate, and pretty much was just a coin toss. Anyways, Fa is cute. Like, really cute. Adorable, even.
Runners-up: Yuurei-chan (Miss Shachiku and the Little Baby Ghost); Myako (Miss Shachiku and the Little Baby Ghost)

Most Badass Character
Ashuna Grisarika
Princess AshunaThe princess of Grisarika, Ashuna is known by the title of “Princess Knight”. She crosses paths with Momo and Menou a couple of times, and always manages to get involved in whatever big event they happen to be tangled up in. Perhaps the strongest character in terms of raw strength, she is definitely a very useful ally to have. She also has some really fun chemistry with Momo.
Runners-up: Empress (Black Rock Shooter Dawn Fall); Menou (The Executioner and Her Way of Life)

Best Couple
Eve and Aoi Amawashi
Aoi and EveThere are a lot of great ships in this season of anime, but I think I’m going to have to go with the couple who have actually shared a (one-sided) kiss on screen. Eve and Aoi are a lot of fun when they’re together, and I’m convinced that their golf is just a way for them to flirt with each other.
Runners-up: Yuko Yoshida & Momo Chiyoda (The Demon Girl Next Door Season 2); Rakira & Rufuria (RPG Real Estate)

Best Battle
Menou vs. Manon Libelle
TMenou prepares to fightThis fight is over pretty quickly, but that’s simply due to Menou demonstrating her strengths when it comes to combat. It also happens to lead directly into the next confrontation, which happens to be against my favourite antagonist of the season. So yeah, this brief, but satisfying, battle showcases Menou’s capabilities well.
Runners-up: Monkey D. Luffy vs. Kaido (One Piece); Momo going berserk (The Executioner and Her Way of Life)

Best Soundtrack
Healer Girl

So many amazing songs in Healer Girl, and picking out just one to showcase isn’t fair. Of course the anime that is effectively a musical has the best soundtrack – it’s a real treat for the ears. The eyes, too, when they’re singing with the purpose of healing. The imagery is beautiful.
Runners-up: Love Live! Nijigasaki High School Idol Club Season 2; BIRDIE WING -Golf Girls’ Story-

Best Finale
Surviving Pandæmoniun and a new journey
The climaxThe last episode of The Executioner and Her Way of Life sees Menou and Ashuna joining forces to fight Pandæmonium, who has taken on a grotesque form fitting of a final boss. The battle actually plays out somewhat differently to how it does in the original light novel, but it does provide the climax that Pandæmonium seeks.
Runners-up: Summoning Ugallu (The Demon Girl Next Door Season 2); School Idol Club Performance (Love Live! Nijigasaki High School Idol Club Season 2)

Best Ending Theme
“Before the Nightmare” by Kanako Takatsuki

Honestly was just considering putting the “Black Rock Shooter” song here for this one, but the actual ending theme for Dawn Fall, “Before the Nightmare”, is one that I very much enjoy. I love me some electric guitar.
Runners-up: “Believe Like Singing” by Healer Girls (Healer Girl); “0” by Good on the Reel (ESTAB LIFE: Great Escape)

Best Anime
The Executioner and Her Way of
LifeThe Executioner and Her Way of LifeI really enjoyed reading the light novels, and the anime adaptation of The Executioner and Her Way of Life definitely did them justice. The tone of the light novels was brought over extremely well, and that’s all I hope for from an adaptation of a good light novel series. Menou, Momo, Akari and Ashuna are all amazing characters, and it was a blast watching their story unfold.
Runners-up: Love Live! Nijigasaki High School Idol Club Season 2; The Demon Girl Next Door Season 2

I know things might be skewed towards The Executioner and Her Way of Life here, but I definitely want to say that this season was perhaps the strongest one we’ve had for a while. We got great surprises in the form of ESTAB LIFE: Great Escape and BIRDIE WING -Golf Girls’ Story-, the sequel seasons improved on what came before, and lots of great music. What an incredible season.
