Ugh, it’s hot. Must mean it is summertime. Perfect weather for staying inside and watching anime all day. Seriously, I don’t want to risk getting sunburn.
Wouldn’t you know it, there’s a bunch of new shows starting as we enter the summer season of anime. Here’s a list of what I hope to watch during these warmer months.
As ever, information is taken from LiveChart.me, and the air dates are BST.
Dropkick on My Devil!! X
Jashin may not possess anywhere near the same level of charm as, say, Jahy, but I did enjoy the first and second seasons of Dropkick on My Devil!. So of course I’ll be watching the third season as well. Presumably we’ll be getting more of Jashin being Jashin, but hey, at least we have other characters like Medusa to balance things out.
Premiere date: 6/7/22
Extreme Hearts
A “Hyper Sports” anime, whatever that means. From the looks of it, we’ll also be getting some idol stuff out of this one. I’m seeing football, baseball and basketball in the PV. Pretty curious to see how all that plays out.
Premiere date: 9/7/22
Love Live! Superstar!! Season 2
Liella! return for a second season, and their group will be growing bigger. Having a five member group was pretty unique for Love Live!, but that’s not gonna be the case after this season, I guess. I currently know next to nothing about the upcoming additions to the group, so I look forward to meeting them.
Premiere date: 17/7/22
Luminous Witches
Or League of Nations Air Force Aviation Magic Band Luminous Witches – I think I’ll just stick with Luminous Witches. The latest entry in the World Witches series. The Witches in this show are not on the front lines fighting the Neuroi, but are idols working to bring happiness to those displaced by the war. It’ll be interesting to see an idol show set in the World Witches universe.
Premiere date: 3/7/22
Lycoris Recoil
At first glance, this looks to be a show similar to Is the Order a Rabbit?. Turns out that the orders this particular café takes might go a bit beyond your usual sweets and hot drinks, though. Perhaps the show that I am most curious about this season. Not entirely sure what to expect, but that sometimes results in the best surprises.
Premiere date: 2/7/22
MADE IN ABYSS: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun
Looks like I’ll need to watch MADE IN ABYSS: Dawn of the Deep Soul (the third film, the first two are recaps of the first season) before getting into this one. But I did enjoy the first season of MADE IN ABYSS, although I don’t quite hold the series in as high esteem as it feels like most other people do. It really didn’t speak to me until Nanachi showed up. But hey, Nanachi’s gonna be present from the get go for this second season, and the new characters being introduced do look pretty interesting.
Premiere date: 6/7/22
Prima Doll
Another show that involves a café, but this one is staffed by automata. Said automata originally served as weapons, but they have to find another purpose with the great war over. Judging by the PV, it seems that their combat abilities might still be required, though…
Premiere date: 3/7/22
RWBY: Ice Queendom
I like RWBY, so of course I’ll be watching this anime. Even more so considering at least a couple of the names attached to it – Gen Urobuchi and huke in particular. The brief moments of combat in the PV look good. I’m definitely looking forward to this one.
Premiere date: 3/7/22 (Although it seems the first three episodes will be available on YouTube in Japan from 24/6/22 to 26/6/22. Guess the rest of the world will just have to wait. Edit: turns out those first three episodes are also available on Crunchyroll and Rooster Teeth First, so we don’t actually need to wait.)
SHADOWS HOUSE Season 2
Kate and Emilico return, and they have a new mystery to investigate when a mysterious robed Shadow starts causing trouble. The first season of SHADOWS HOUSE was fun, and I am very much looking forward to more.
Premiere date: 8/7/22
Smile of the Arsnotoria the Animation
A show about five girls who attend an academy to learn manners and magic in order to become “true ladies”. That sentence alone holds some pretty strong appeal for me. A slice of life show with a fantasy setting? Sign me up!
Premiere date: 6/7/22
Teppen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Laughing ’til you Cry
Fifteen exclamation marks! And I thought Keijo!!!!!!!!‘s eight was over the top… Anyways, this is a show about girls doing comedy. Will the comedy translate well from Japanese? I don’t know. Still willing to give this show a watch, though.
Premiere date: 2/7/22
YUREI DECO
I really like the aesthetic of this show. Enough that it has sold me on watching it. Fortunately, the story sounds pretty interesting, too – a girl named Berry meets a hacker named Hack, and joins the “Ghost Detective Club”. They investigate Phantom ZERO, who is making people lose “love” – but not love in the platonic or romantic sense, but the numerical social credit system.
Very curious about this particular show. With Science SARU producing the show, it does remind me of Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken! – but it also brings to mind URAHARA.
Premiere date: 3/7/22
I may or may not watch TOKYO MEW MEW NEW; I haven’t decided for sure yet. Also worth noting are that both BanG Dream! and D4DJ will be getting special episodes. There are some short-form anime airing that I may pick up as well, but that depends on whether they get picked up for streaming.
Since nothing I’m watching this season is an adaptation of any manga or light novels I have read, I won’t be covering any shows weekly. I don’t think. Unless something sells me on doing so with its first episode. We’ll just have to see.
A fair amount to look forward to for the summer, with both original and returning shows.
