Thoughts on The Great Jahy Will Not Be Defeated! Volume 2

Jahy’s quest to restore the Dark Realm continues in the second volume of Wakame Konbu’s The Great Jahy Will Not Be Defeated! manga. She may have become a little more powerful, but the more things change, the more they stay the same. A new character also has their sights set on Jahy…
This volume contains chapters six through to fourteen. The Great Jahy Will Not Be Defeated! Volume 2The Great Jahy, the Dark Lord’s right-hand woman, has fallen into the human world… and fallen low! But after enduring indignity after indignity (often resulting from her own questionable decisions), she has at long last managed to restore a sliver of her once formidable magical power! Unfortunately, her struggles in the human world are only just beginning! Will getting interrogated by the police or surviving on pennies until payday break her? NAY! For the Great Jahy will not be defeated!

Jahy returns, and continues being as bratty as ever. Although to be fair to her, she can be pretty diligent when she wants to be. Jahy is slowly acclimatising to life in the human world, although that’s something she wants to keep on the down low as much as possible – particularly from her subordinate Druj.

Making her first appearance in this volume is Saurva, who has her eye on the position of the Dark Lord’s right-hand woman – and is determined to take out Jahy in order to get it. Just a shame that Saurva’s luck seems to be worse than even Jahy’s… Also, Jahy is totally oblivious of Saurva. Yeah, Saurva has it pretty rough.

Whilst Jahy can be a brat at times, we do see some of her more vulnerable side in this volume – particularly when she catches a cold. That whole chapter is a pretty sweet one, where we see that Jahy’s boss cares for her a great deal – although we already knew that – and that even Ryou can be sympathetic to Jahy’s plight. It’s nice to see that Jahy does have such caring people around her, even if she may take them for granted.

This is a fun volume of The Great Jahy Will Not Be Defeated!. New characters bring some interesting things to the series, and we see that Jahy is slowly coming to appreciate the people around her – maybe. If nothing else, she is settling into her life in the human world – although she wouldn’t openly admit it here. Either way, it’s nice seeing the way in which her character is going. Excellent work from Wakame Konbu here.
