Spring 2022 Anime: First Impressions

Spring is upon us, and so too is a new season of anime. As usual, I’ll be sharing my initial thoughts on each show that I’ve chosen to watch for this season.

ESTAB LIFE: Great EscapeESTAB LIFE Great EscapeI’m four episodes into this show, so perhaps this isn’t quite a “first” impression. Either way, lots of people writing this show off because CGI. That’s their problem though; ESTAB LIFE has been a blast. The three main heroines are great (especially Martes as of episode 4), and this show has me laughing so much. Can’t do much about people who abhor the CGI, but for everyone else willing to give this a chance: do check it out.

The Executioner and Her Way of LifeMenou fightsGreat start to a light novel adaptation I was looking forward to. Besides shifting some minor events around a bit, this episode pretty much was how I would’ve imagined how an anime adaptation of the beginning of The Executioner and Her Way of Life would’ve went. I imagine anyone who went in completely blind were quite surprised. Also, I already like the soundtrack. Promising stuff here.

Love Live! Nijigasaki High School Idol Club Season 2Love Live! Nijigasaki High School Idol Club Season 2The Nijigasaki girls return, and they are bringing some new faces along with them. Making a strong first impression is Lanzhu Zong, who puts on a show – and then claims she can do just fine as a solo school idol, despite having assistance from another newcomer, Mia Taylor…
Shioriko Mifune also joins the cast, and she seems far more likeable than she initially did in the Love Love! All Stars game – so that’s nice. But yeah, it’s more Love Live!, and that’s all it really needs to be.

Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story Final Season -The Dawn of the Ephemeral Dream-Magia Record Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story Final Season -The Dawn of the Ephemeral Dream-The final part of Magia Record starts by focusing on Ui, Touka and Nemu, and revealing some rather interesting information. The complete final season is available to watch right now, but I can still offer a first impression of it.
So yeah, pretty intriguing stuff to start the final season. Definitely gonna get the whole show finished sooner rather than later to see what it all means.

BLACK ROCK SHOOTER DAWN FALLBLACK ROCK SHOOTER DAWN FALLMassive NieR: Automata vibes from this show – that’s my biggest takeaway from this first episode. Apparently¬†this show is lifting quite a bit from the Black Rock Shooter PSP game, so anyone who has played that will be in very familiar territory. There was one scene that I really could have done without ever seeing, but besides that, did enjoy what was on offer here.

Healer GirlHealer GirlTo put it quite simply, Healer Girl is an anime musical. Makes sense, when music has the power to heal, both physically and mentally. Had a fun time watching the first episode.

BIRDIE WING -Golf Girls’ Story-BIRDIE WING -Golf Girls' Story-Now this show might be the biggest surprise of the season. I was expecting an anime about girls playing golf – and we got that, but there was also so much more to it. Interesting to see a character treat golf games almost like assassinations – never really thought about comparing swinging a golf club to firing a gun.
The camera panning over each golf course before the start of a round is also something I found pretty neat. Makes it feel like a video game. Very intrigued with this show.

RPG Real EstateRPG Real EstateThis was a fun first episode. Definitely some familiar character types going on here – Rakira looks just like Is the Order a Rabbit?‘s Rize, and Fa being a dragon girl (I presume) who hates clothes brings to mind I’ve Been Killing Slimes for 300 Years and Maxed Out My Level‘s Flatorte. Still, enjoyed what I saw here a lot. Definitely has the kind of humour I like, and the adorable Fa is quickly becoming a favourite for me.

Miss Shachiku and the Little Baby GhostMiss Shachiku and the Little Baby GhostSure is a whole lot of cute going on this season. Won’t hear any complaints about that from me, though. Besides being adorable, this anime also adds a level of wholesomeness with the ghost girl trying her best to take care of the overworked Fushihara. Good stuff here.

The Demon Girl Next Door Season 2The Demon Girl Next Door Season 2Yuko and Momo return, and they are still so good together. I still absolutely adore how expressive Yuko’s tail is, and I can already see that continues to be the case in this second season. Really fun first episode, so happy to have these girls back once more.

That’s all the shows I intend to watch this season, except for Onipan!. That one begins airing a few days apart from the others, so I figured it would just make more sense to get this post out now.
As things stand right at the beginning of this season, I’d have to say The Executioner and Her Way of Life is at the top of my list – although the likes of Healer Girl, The Demon Girl Next Door Season 2 and RPG Real Estate are right on its heals.
Also have to give special mention to BIRDIE WING, because that definitely came as quite the surprise. Definitely a good surprise, though.

Looks like this spring season is shaping up to be quite an interesting one – we also have the return of Toei shows to look forward to, as well. Definitely quite a lot going on this season, and I’m looking forward to all of it.

Estab Life has probably been my surprise of the season~
Never did I think I’d ever see a show with an episode like episode 4 o_o Martes is kinda like a less perverted (but definitely not “pure”) version of Kuroko, but with the fortune of not being into a Mikoto (in regards to Equa actually returning her affections quite nicely, instead of with violence/disdain). And the show is just really imaginative and takes you on journeys to all sorts of different places. I mean, communist penguins!? Who int he world thought there’d be an anime utilizing that? And I love how it pulls unexpected things off, like the yakuza boss’ new dream.

We seem to be watching the same things. Well, for now.

I can chime in that BRS definitely is like a reboot of the PSP game. You have the same overall story going on, but the actual things that happen are fairly different. Hopefully it can have a just as yuri positive of an ending as the game had!

Shachiku was just….I don’t know I’ve seen another show with that level of adorable before….
