Winter 2022 Anime: Thoughts So Far

We’re now halfway through the winter 2022 season of anime, so I’ll be sharing my thoughts so far on all the shows I’ve been watching.

Akebi’s Sailor UniformASUThis show is gorgeous. It’s not just pretty visuals it has going for it, though – Komichi Akebi might just be my favourite character from all the shows I’m watching this season. Always full of joy and curiosity, just watching her win the hearts of all the other girls in her school never fails to put a smile on my face. Absolutely adored the interactions she had with Erika as of the most recent episode, too. Without a doubt the best show that is airing this season.

Attack on Titan Final Season Part 2AOTFS2We draw ever closer and closer to the end of Attack on Titan, and it’s making for a fairly decent watch. Certain people are taking extreme measures, which will lead the people closest to them to really consider what the best course of action is to take. Some pretty good stuff here.

BanG Dream! Girls Band Party!☆PICO FEVER!BDGBPPF - RAS & TaeMy thoughts on BanG Dream! Girls Band Party!☆PICO FEVER! remain the same as last time: bite-sized pieces of BanG Dream! silliness. It’s nice to see RAISE A SUILEN and Morfonica have more presence in them, too.

BORUTO: NARUTO NEXT GENERATIONSBNNG - SaradaWe’re getting ninjas vs. pirates in BORUTO: NARUTO NEXT GENERATIONS now. The arc is still near the beginning, but the more powerful enemies that Boruto and company will have to fight have been established. They also have an uneasy alliance with former foes, so there’s plenty of stuff there to keep them on their toes. Not a bad arc so far, but I am hoping we get further development on Boruto’s Karma sooner rather than later.

CUE!CThis show about rookie voice actresses is fun. After introducing its cast of characters, they’ve split off into smaller groups to pursue all different types of voice acting. Anime, idols, radio; that’s what we’ve seen so far. Pretty enjoyable to see variety in there, rather than a strict focus on one thing. Keeps things interesting, and probably works well with its large cast of characters.

Delicious Party Pretty CureDPPCDelicious Party PreCure is giving me some HappinessCharge vibes – which is unfortunate, because I really did not enjoy HappinessCharge PreCure
We’re only two episodes in at the time of writing, so we’ve only really been introduced to our lead Cure, Yui Nagomi, so far. I don’t hate her, but I don’t exactly like her, either. Feels a bit generic, I guess.
I’m hoping things will improve once the other Cures have joined, but we’ll have to wait and see.
Not exactly super hyped about this season of PreCure, but I’ll keep watching to see where it goes.

Girls’ FrontlineGFI’ve been pretty pleasantly surprised by how solid Girls’ Frontline is. It may not be my favourite of the season, but it is proving to be quite watchable. If you want some gunslinging action, this is something from this season that may just scratch that itch.

In the Land of LeadaleItLoLThis is a really fun show. Cayna is definitely a fun protagonist, and her interactions with her kids are most amusing. I’m always happy to have an enjoyable fantasy romp, and In the Land of Leadale is ticking those boxes for now. Very much looking forward to learning more about the fairy companion she has picked up.

Miss KUROITSU from the Monster Development DepartmentMKftMDDThe concept of this show is great, and it’s definitely pulling it off well so far. There’s definitely something fun about seeing behind the scenes of an evil organisation, and the pains that they have to go through to get their latest monsters out into the field. Lots of fun to be found here, even more so if you’re into tokusatsu. I’ll admit the humour doesn’t always quite land for me, but it does more often than not. Still, pretty solid show.

One PieceOP - Zoro attackThe Wano Kuni arc continues to move along, and Luffy and his allies are clashing with Kaido’s forces at this point. Battles are breaking out all over, and chaos pretty much reigns over Onigashima. Which means plenty of chances for the Straw Hats to show off just how powerful they are. Of course, all that chaos is just the prelude to the major event of the chapter, which I still eagerly anticipate.

Police in a PodPiaPPolice in a Pod has some pretty great humour, and also sometimes deals with some heavy topics – it is a show about police officers, after all. Certainly makes for an interesting blend, but that manages to work out well enough. A pretty strong show, I’d say.

Princess Connect! Re: Dive Season 2PCRD2The second season of Princess Connect! Re: Dive has been great so far; bringing us even more of the stuff that made its first season enjoyable. Genuinely good humour, some great animation, and Pecorine and Karyl are a recipe for a real sweet treat. A strong showing so far.

Slow LoopSLAnother cute girls fishing show, and this one has a particular focus on fly fishing. It’s fun, and I do enjoy the interactions between the two main characters here. Whilst it may have its more silly moments, this show also does have some genuinely heartfelt stuff as well. Seems like we’ve reeled in quite the catch with Slow Loop.

Waccha PriMagi!WP - HinaI’ve liked what I’ve seen from Waccha PriMagi for the most part. We have a fairly interesting cast of characters here, and their songs are pretty good. It also has the concept of a magic world separate from our own, and that’s a concept I do like – so naturally I’m looking forward to the upcoming episode where they explore said magic world a bit more.

That’s it.
Lots of fun stuff going on this season, with Akebi’s Sailor Uniform sitting pretty at the top of my list as my favourite show this season. I just adore everything about it. Princess Connect! Re: Dive Season 2 and In the Land of Leadale are also turning out to be highlights. I’d say I’m quite generally impressed by what I’ve watched so far, and very much look forward to seeing what the rest of the season will bring us.
