Thoughts on The Great Jahy Will Not Be Defeated Volume 1

The Great Jahy Will Not Be Defeated is a manga written and illustrated by Wakame Konbu. It focuses on Jahy, the Dark Lord’s right hand woman. Circumstances have forced her into the human world with a child-like form, so she tries to eke out a living whilst searching for mana crystals to restore the Dark Realm.
The manga is licensed for English release by Square Enix Manga & Books. This first volume contains chapters one through to five. The Great Jahy Will Not Be Defeated! Volume 1RESTORE THE DARK REALM… OR BUST!
The Great Jahy, the Dark Realm’s second-in-command, cuts a frightening figure, feared and revered by all. But when a run-in with a magical girl results in the destruction of the precious mana crystal, the Dark Realm falls, transporting the newly puny and powerless Jahy to the human world! Unfortunately, plotting the restoration of the Dark Realm from a cramped, crumbling one-room apartment is no easy feat when you have rent to pay and a job to keep!

I first discovered The Great Jahy Will Not Be Defeated! through its anime adaptation, but I enjoyed that enough that I decided to pick up the manga once I was aware that it was going to be released in English. This first volume is interesting, in that it has three chapters – numbered 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3 respectively, before the actual series starts. Honestly, they could be part of the main story too, as they don’t feel particularly out of place with the other chapters.

So the story here focuses on Jahy, and her quest to collect mana crystals to revive the Dark Realm. Sounds simple enough, but Jahy also has to contend with having a job and paying rent. Jahy’s lofty position in the Dark Realm definitely does not help her adjust to life in the human world, as she has all these expectations of how she expects to be treated. Safe to say, nobody treats her like the second-in-command of the Dark Realm any more.

Three other characters are introduced alongside Jahy in this volume. First is her boss, a kind-hearted who dotes on Jahy. Then we have the boss’s sister, and Jahy’s landlady, Ryou. Ryou is far more harsh towards Jahy, especially when it comes to collecting rent. Whilst Ryou can be somewhat aggressive, this volume also shows us that she does have a caring side.
The third character is another one from the Dark Realm: Druj. Jahy’s masochistic servant in the Dark Realm seems to have made in the human world, much to Jahy’s chagrin. Druj still considers Jahy her superior, and Jahy isn’t exactly coming clean about her situation any time soon.

This first volume of The Great Jahy Will Not Be Defeated is a fun introduction to the series, establishing the characters and their relationships fairly quickly. It also isn’t too mean-spirited towards Jahy. Whilst she does have several misfortunes, the people she interacts with generally have good hearts, and she doesn’t always get the short end of the stick.
Good start for this series, looking forward to seeing how Jahy’s search for the mana crystals continues.
