The third volume of Hitoma Iruma’s Adachi and Shimamura light novel focuses on the lead up to Valentine’s Day.
Be Mine, Valentine.
It’s February 4th and Adachi has a question for Shimamura about Valentine’s Day – if, that is, she can muster the courage to ask. A lot can happen in ten days!
If you were to put all the events of the Adachi and Shimamura light novel series onto a timeline, the events of this volume might just be the easiest to place. The events focused on here all take place in the ten days leading up to Valentine’s Day. Well, one chapter does focus on the beginning of April, but again, specific dates are actually given.
The perspective switches between Adachi and Shimamura throughout, but I’d say that we spend more time in Adachi’s point of view. I personally prefer Adachi’s POV, simply because there is a whole lot going on in her head that she refuses to show openly.
There’s just something so good about Adachi’s gay panic as she tries to figure out what it is she is feeling for Shimamura, and how to maintain their friendship without getting too weird about it.
When we get to Shimamura’s point of view, she makes it clear that she knows that Adachi has been acting stranger than ever more recently. It seems that Shimamura may have an inkling of what is actually going on with Adachi. Shimamura doesn’t seem quite sure about the whole thing, though.
From the switching of perspectives, we get to see Adachi and Shimamura’s thoughts as Valentine’s Day approaches, and it probably won’t come as a surprise to discover that they treat the event with different levels of reverence.
As you’d expect, the only thing on Adachi’s mind is Shimamura.
As for Shimamura, though, she reconnects with an old friend. Well, I say reconnect, but… that whole thing seems rather awkward between the two. Interestingly enough, Shimamura’s thoughts are more occupied with Adachi, despite being with said friend. It is here that we get a slight peek into how Shimamura feels about Adachi, and it turns out to be rather interesting. No doubt Adachi would have mixed feelings if she heard about Shimamura hanging out with another girl, though.
This volume is a great entry in the Adachi and Shimamura light novel series. Adachi’s feelings for Shimamura are becoming more and more evident, whilst Shimamura has started showing signs of being rather keen on Adachi, too. Seeing both girls’ preparations for the run up to Valentine’s is interesting, too. A fun read.
