Having passed the halfway point of the summer season of anime, I shall be sharing my thoughts on each of the shows I have been watching so far. We had a couple of late starters, and some delays due to the Olympics, but this season has certainly given us some interesting stuff.
The aquatope on white sandPerhaps the most pleasant surprise of the season, The aquatope on white sand has been consistently good. Very pretty to look at, too. I hope Kukuru is able to succeed, with Fuuka by her side, of course.
Blue Reflection RayI feel like many of the problems the characters face in Blue Reflection Ray could be dealt with much better if they were all just a little more proactive. There’s been a bit too much standing around and watching things unfold for my liking. Seems like the most recent episodes are remedying that a little bit, which is nice to see. Finally.
BORUTO: NARUTO NEXT GENERATIONSThe Vessel Arc continues, and it has given us some pretty interesting stuff. There have been solid fights, and plenty of revelations, too. Very curious to see where this will all end up.
The Great Jahy Will Not Be Defeated! One of the shows that started later than the others, but a super fun one so far. It does bring to mind certain other comedy anime – Gabriel DropOut and Dropkick on My Devil, for example – but I think it will etch out its own identity. Also gets bonus points for having hololive members perform the ending theme. We’ve come a long way from hololive lookalikes being removed from anime…
Have to say, I was surprised to find Kageki Shojo!! dealing with some rather heavy topics. Seems those are behind us, for the time being. This show is all right, I guess. I’ll honestly say I wasn’t keen on most of the characters to begin with, but they all don’t seem that bad now. If you were to ask me about a stage girl anime, though, Revue Starlight will be the one that continues to take precedence in my mind.
Love Live! Superstar!!Love Live! Superstar!! is supposed to air every Monday on Crunchyroll at 7pm (or maybe 8pm, depending on when you’re asking) BST, for the UK at least. It seems that the episode never goes up on time, and then when it does, there’s a longer wait for the English subtitles to be added. That’s been kind of frustrating, but nothing to do with the show itself.
Focusing on the show itself, I really, really, hope that Ren gets that stick out of her arse sooner rather than later. She’s probably a fine character, but her opposition of the school idol club is something that I just can’t seem to get along with.
All the other characters are great – Keke being my favourite, by the way – and I’m sure Ren will fit right in, once she deals with her problems. For the moment, though, her presence is frustrating to me. Putting everything with Ren aside, this is shaping up to be pretty good.
Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story 2nd Season – Eve of AwakeningOK, pretty good stuff so far from this one. Doesn’t hold a candle to Puella Magi Madoka Magica, but I never expected it to. On that note, I hope the familiar faces showing up will have actual plot significance, without stealing the show. Due to this one also being a late starter, we’re also in very early days at the moment. Anything could happen.
Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid SThe second season of Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid is doing a great job of adapting various chapters of the manga so far, and even throwing in some (what I assume are) anime original segments. Tohru, Elma and Kanna are stealing the show, at least on the dragon side of things. Miss Kobayashi is just as great as ever, on the human side, of course. There’s been a few chapters adapted that I don’t care for from the manga, and the anime didn’t change my mind on them. Still, I’ve said this before, the good outweighs the bad.
My Hero Academia Season 5It feels as if the story is not in a hurry to get anywhere in this season of My Hero Academia. More than halfway through the season, and we’ve only had small hints about the next big conflict. Maybe a little too much time was spent on Endeavor’s family life…
My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! XStill consider myself Team Maria, although lately I don’t feel so optimistic about it. There’s not been a whole lot interactions between Katarina and Maria in this season so far. Also, we need more characters like Frey. I feel like something has been lost now that Katarina doesn’t have to worry about death flags…
One PieceAnother one with a story that’s not in a particular hurry to get anywhere. Not a surprise, considering how close it is to the manga. But hey, at least the animation has been nice to watch, if nothing else.
Tropical-Rouge! PreCureI’ve really been enjoying this season of Pretty Cure so far. The main cast of characters are fun, and there’s some pretty good side characters, too. I’m still super curious about what is up between Asuka and Yuriko; hopefully we’ll get some answers sooner rather than later.
Whilst I may have some frustrations here and there regarding this season of anime, I’d say overall I have a positive impression of it. The really good stuff definitely more than makes up for the things that aren’t quite to my taste.
My top three currently looks something like this: Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid S, The aquatope on white sand and Tropical-Rouge! PreCure.
I look forward to seeing what the rest of this season will bring us.
