Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid S Episode 4: Elma & The Company

In the fourth episode of Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid S, we’re getting some office work, a patrol and a trip to a theme park.

Elma

Turns out Elma’s quite good at coding

This episode kicks off with an adaptation of chapter 35 of the manga, “Elma & The Company”. That can be found in the 4th volume. With Elma proving to be surprisingly good at coding, Miss Kobayashi increases her workload. However, Elma misunderstands something, and ends up challenging Miss Kobayashi to a competition.

The adaptation of this particular chapter is pretty spot on. In fact, the drinking scene at the end wasn’t even in the original manga, so we’re actually getting a little bit extra. Whilst there is one panel sort of between chapters showing Elma wanting to go home, the anime elaborates on what Miss Kobayashi and Takiya are talking about – maids and glasses, respectively. Hmm, I wonder if Takiya considers glasses to be versatile…
Also worth noting is that Elma has a fairly decent idea of the relationship between Miss Kobayashi and Tohru. Even so, she is still willing to kiss Miss Kobayashi, though that is a misunderstanding on her part.

Tohru & Elma

Tohru and Elma end up on a patrol together

Then we move on to the adaptation of chapter 43 from the 5th volume of the manga, “Tohru & The Patrol”. There’s some good stuff in this one, the first you’ll likely notice being Tohru in casual clothes. Now that is something I would like to see much more often.
In the manga, Tohru goes on patrol with Sasakibe because the other neighbour, Yana, had a concert and couldn’t make it. The anime decides that’s a minor detail not worth bothering with.
Another good thing to come from this one is more interaction between Tohru and Elma. All I say about that is look forward to even more in the future.
Much like the first part of this episode, the adaptation is spot on besides that one small detail I mentioned earlier.

Miss Kobayashi & Tohru

Miss Kobayashi and Tohru alone together at the amusement park

The final part of this episodes adapts chapter 50, “Tohru & The Amusement Park” from volume 6 of the manga. It is Miss Kobayashi, Tohru and Kanna who go to the amusement park together in the manga, with Saikawa meeting up with them after they arrive.
Here, in the anime, it is Miss Kobayashi, Tohru, Kanna, Ilulu and Saikawa going to the amusement park together.
The main focus is on Miss Kobayashi and Tohru, so everything that happens between them in this episode also happens in the manga. Things are slightly different when it comes to Kanna and Saikawa, though.

Ilulu, Saikawa & Kanna

Ilulu, Saikawa and Kanna enjoying their time at the amusement park

In the manga, it is only Kanna and Saikawa together at the amusement park. The haunted house thing does happen, but they cut out a roller coaster scene (with handholding) in favour of a zorbing scene.
Kind of feels like the anime is trying to push a Kanna x Saikawa x Ilulu thing, but don’t hold your breath for that. Especially considering what is shown in the next episode preview…

But, still, this was a good episode. Always to happy to see more Elma, so the double-dose of her was something I enjoyed a lot. For me personally, Elma definitely stands alongside Tohru and Kanna as one of the best dragons, and it looks like this season will be showing those who have not read the manga exactly why that is the case. Quite excited about that.
