Here we are again: roughly halfway through yet another season of anime. With that being the case, I shall be sharing my thoughts on all the shows I’ve been watching this spring. Let’s jump right in.
Battle Athletes Victory ReSTART!There’s perhaps a little too much going on in this show. Maybe it would benefit from focusing solely on athletic events rather than squeezing in several subplots? I dunno.
It’s also hard to determine whether this show wants to be taken seriously or not. It’s kind of all over the place, but I will say it does keep my interest.
Blue Reflection RayThis show has been pretty intriguing so far. Feels like there’s still a lot questions yet to be answered, but I can’t deny that it is keeping my interest. Besides, we’ve got some pretty nice stuff out of this show so far.
BORUTO: NARUTO NEXT GENERATIONSThe action has been picking up in the Vessel Arc, with Naruto taking on Delta. It wasn’t good as previous fights in the arc, but I guess we are drawing ever closer to some more impressive fights. Still, pretty decent stuff so far.
Farewell, My Dear CramerOh, hey, guess I did get used to the art style. This show has some pretty good moments, although there’s perhaps not quite as much football playing as I’d thought there would be. Considering I’m generally not a fan of football, maybe that’s actually a good thing? Well, whatever the case may be, I am getting some enjoyment out of this show.
I’ve Been Killing Slimes for 300 Years and Maxed Out My LevelI absolutely adore this adaptation of the I’ve Been Killing Slimes for 300 Years and Maxed Out My Level light novels. It’s not a 1:1 to adaptation, but I can see that a lot of care has been put into the chapters they have chosen to adapt. It is fairly faithful to its source material, and the soundtrack, with its violins and bagpipes, is just superb. The animation seems to be increasing in quality with each episode, too.
Let’s Make a Mug TooThis a pretty chill show. It’s about girls doing pottery, and that’s about it. I can’t help but keep wondering if they’ll recreate that one scene from Ghost, though…
Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid S Short Animation SeriesIt’s cute. A nice drip feed of Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid content as we draw closer to the second season.
My Hero Academia Season 5The stakes are definitely a step down from the previous season, but hey, at least we get to see a bunch of super powered school kids beat each other up. I’ll admit that the matches have been pretty impressive so far, and I’m sure that’ll be true of the ones that will follow.
One PieceThis one is drawing close to the end of the Kozuki Oden flashback arc, which means we are drawing ever closer and closer to a climactic battle. Fortunately, the flashback arc itself has been pretty impressive, as we are told of Kozuki Oden’s exploits.
Shadows HouseThis show has been pretty great so far. It’s another one with questions yet to be answered, though we’ve been getting bits and pieces about the house as the season goes on. I was expecting a darker tone to begin with, but it seems that Emilico brings sunshine wherever she goes.
Super CubThis show about a girl and her Super Cub is super chill. Well, perhaps not quite for that one Reiko episode, but let’s just put that aside for now. Definitely a show you can just sit back and relax with.
Tropical-Rouge! PreCurePretty good season of PreCure so far. Definitely has a strong cast of characters going for it. We’re kind of in between major plot points at the time of writing, but the show is still proving to be sufficiently entertaining.
The World Ends With You The AnimationAs someone who has played both the DS and Switch versions of The World Ends With You, I can tell you that this is not a terrible adaptation. However, I’d also say playing the game itself is the best way to experience the story.
It definitely gets bonus points for using songs from the game’s OST, too.
ZOMBIE LAND SAGA REVENGEThe second season of ZOMBIE LAND SAGA has been fairly decent so far. I still don’t think it had quite the same impact as the first, but we’ve still got a serviceable idol show here. That’s the thing, though; zombies are the only thing that makes this different from your garden variety idol show.
Still enjoyable, and the thing that some people seemed to be concerned about has not come to pass… yet. Besides, Saki, Ai and Junko carry the show.
That wraps up my mid season impressions for all the shows I am watching. Ask me to pick out a top three, and I’d say I’ve Been Killing Slimes for 300 Years and Maxed Out My Level, Shadows House and Super Cub.
I feel really quite positive about this season, even if there are some shows with more noticeable flaws than others. Hey, if I’m gonna watch these shows, might as well enjoy them.
