The spring 2021 season of anime has started, and as usual, I shall be sharing my initial thoughts on each of the shows I have chosen to watch. Let’s just dive straight in.
My Hero Academia Season 5The fifth season of My Hero Academia actually started airing in the end of March, so we are a couple of episodes into at the time of writing. The very first episode pretty much recapped what happened previously, and the one after kicked off season five’s story proper: Class 1-A vs. Class 1-B. Looks like it could have some potential.
Farewell, My Dear CramerStill not sure about the art style at this point, but I guess it’s not enough to put me off watching this show entirely. Even though I typically have no interest in football, this show has got my attention.
Let’s Make a Mug TooSome pretty fun stuff, and I also know more about Japanese pottery now than I ever thought I would. Pretty typical girls’ club stuff, and that is all I really need.
Super CubA pretty chill start to this show about a girl and her Super Cub. Seems like this could be a good show to relax with, similar in tone to Laid-Back Camp and Non Non Biyori. Also has some nice use of colour, as well.
Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid S Short Animation SeriesThese shorts may only be a couple of minutes long, but it sure is nice seeing Miss Kobayashi, Tohru and the others again. They’re drip feeding us the content before the second season airs, and I’m fine with that. Nice to hype it up.
ZOMBIE LAND SAGA REVENGEZOMBIE LAND SAGA returns with its second season. It does not have that surprise factor the first one offered us, but I did enjoy the brawl that broke out. A shame Saki didn’t get to join in, though…
The first season set quite a high bar, and this one has its work cut out to clear it.
The World Ends With You The AnimationThey used songs from the game’s soundtrack, which immediately earns points from me. This first episode does feel rushed, but I get why they did it. The first three days in the game are lots of tutorials, and that wouldn’t exactly be the most thrilling thing to adapt.
They managed to capture the game’s style, though, which is nice. Fight scenes were pretty good, too.
Blue Reflection RayAn interesting start for this one. I like the contrast between the two main characters, and I suspect that they’re going to grow closer as the story progresses. Also, I’m always up for a new magical girl anime.
I’ve Been Killing Slimes for 300 Years and Maxed Out My LevelOff to an excellent start for my most anticipated show this season. I love the light novels, and the adaptation is already on point. Very much looking forward to everything that is to follow.
Battle Athletes Victory ReSTART!The first episode introduced us to our main character, and a few others she interacted with. We got some decently fun stuff in this first episode, though it doesn’t exactly feel like things have kicked off properly yet. I guess things will pick up once the actual athletics events get under way.
Shadows HouseThis was quite intriguing. Those “living dolls” seem far more human than the shadows themselves. There’s still a lot that I don’t know about this one, but I am pretty keen to see what secrets the Shadows House holds.
I was expecting a dark atmosphere, but the first episode was actually pretty light-hearted. Let’s see if it stays that way, though…
That covers all the shows I have chosen to watch for this season of anime. I’ve Been Killing Slimes for 300 Years and Maxed Out My Level is the stand out for me this season, as a fan of the light novels.
Tough to say how I’d rank everything else this early on in the season, though.
Whatever the case, there’s plenty to look forward to.
