Thoughts on Wandering Witch: The Journey of Elaina Volume 2 (Manga)

The second volume of Itsuki Nanao’s Wandering Witch: The Journey of Elaina manga continues adapting stories from the first light novel. Elaina’s travels continue, though the memories she makes may not exactly be considered happy ones…
This volume contains chapters five through to eight, as well as one bonus story, written by Jougi Shiraishi.Wandering Witch The Journey of Elaina Volume 2 mangaAs Elaina continues on her travels, she meets a boy who collects happiness in a bottle to give to someone he loves, a bedridden young man who makes peace with his end, and a mysterious princess in the royal palace of a ruined country. When travel fatigue begins to set in, Elaina reunites with her mentor Fran, the Stardust Witch, who rekindles Elaina’s passion for her journey.

The stories that this volume of manga adapts from the light novel are some of the heavier ones. There’s quite a bit of dark imagery to be found throughout. Lots of blood and tragedy to go round.
Those familiar with Wandering Witch: The Journey of Elaina will know that the series does have some very dark stories, so it comes as no surprise to see them here.
The manga definitely gets into greater detail with these stories than with its anime counterpart.

Something that seems to be a common theme throughout most of the chapters in this volume is things not being as they seem. Quite a bit of deception to be found within the stories this time around.
Sometimes it’s self-inflicted, sometimes Elaina is the one actively deceiving someone. Another thing that seems to be a recurring theme is that the places Elaina visits are all places she quietly resolves to never come back to again. Yeah, Elaina has it pretty rough in this volume of the manga.

It’s not all doom and gloom, though. A reunion with her teacher is a much happier occasion, in which Elaina reaffirms her desire for being a traveller. Fran also brings up a very appropriate comparison: a traveller is like a bookmark. They touch people’s stories briefly before moving on.
That line pretty much hits the nail on the head when it comes to Elaina’s journeys.

The Wandering Witch: The Journey of Elaina manga continues its stride with its second volume, giving us a look at some of the darker tales from Elaina’s travels. It is capped off with a rather sweet chapter, which is a nice change of pace compared to what came before.
A solid second volume for the manga series.
