Autumn 2020 Anime: Thoughts So Far

We are around halfway through another season of anime, and as such I’ll be sharing my thoughts on all the shows I’ve been watching this season. There is some pretty great stuff, so I’ll just dive straight in. This will also include shows that started in previous seasons.

Adachi and Shimamura

Shimamura and AdachiThis show has been wonderful so far, and has been doing the original light novel justice. This is just a really enjoyable show, and easily something I recommend watching.

Assault Lily BOUQUETALBThis is a show that I am having a lot of fun watching. Also, have to mention the opening theme by RAISE A SUILEN, because it so good. Lots of fun characters here, and some impressive action sequences.

BORUTO: NARUTO NEXT GENERATIONSBNNG - Boruto & SaradaBORUTO: NARUTO NEXT GENERATIONS is well into a main story arc, which has seen Team 7 have a very rough time. They’ve had their training arc now, though, and things look like they’ll get very interesting as they prepare to face their next foe. Quite eager to see how that all plays out.

D4DJ First MixD4DJFMD4DJ First Mix started later than the other shows here, but even with only three episodes I can safely say that I really like this one. Apparently I have a thing for characters just like Rinku, and then add on to that a fantastic soundtrack… yeah, there’s a lot going on here that I adore.

Dropout Idol Fruit TartDIFTHalfway through this season, I have to say that maybe Dropout Idol Fruit Tart‘s first episode was not the greatest indication of what to expect. This show has just been getting better and better with each episode; probably one of the funniest shows I am watching this season.

Healin’ Good PreCureNodoka, Hinata and AsumiThis show is just after the point where the girls received a power up, so we’re kind of in between story developments. The most recent episode was pretty typical stuff for PreCure, though still enjoyable. Most seasons of PreCure tend to get that way; I’m sure things will really start picking again very soon.

Is the Order a Rabbit? – BLOOMItoaRBThe third season of Is the Order a Rabbit? is just as wonderful as ever. Nothing but delight when watching this show.

Iwakakeru -Sport Climbing Girls-I-SCG-
Put in its simplest form, this anime is about girls climbing walls. However, that has proven to be quite compelling, particularly with it being about competitive wall climbing. I particularly like how they are still bringing in Konomi’s video game skills when she analyses each wall she has to climb. That ability might not be perfect, though…

Kuma Kuma Kuma BearYuna, Fina and Shuri making puddingThis show had a bit of an iffy start with the order they decided to show events, but I’d say it has managed to redeem itself. Out of the light novel adaptations this season, this one is taking most liberties. Still proving to be pretty enjoyable though, and is cute.

Love Live! Nijigasaki High School Idol ClubLLNHSICI knew that this show was going to be good when the first song we got was Setsuna Yuki’s CHASE!, and I still think it is good now. Each episode so far focuses on one specific character, and most recently was Kanata. All the episodes have been enjoyable to watch.

Maesetsu! Opening ActMOAWhilst I can’t really say much about the comedy in this show, I do know that its most recent episode was really sweet. It’s a decently fun watch.

One PieceOP - Monkey D LuffyThe plot has progressed in One Piece, but probably not by all that much. It’s a bit of a trudge, but we do get some really nice moments here and there.

Strike Witches: Road to BerlinSWRtBAfter episode 6 of Strike Witches: Road to Berlin, I suddenly have newfound respect for Barkhorn. I wonder why that is…?
Anyways, really enjoying this season. Lots of really great stuff going on here.

Wandering Witch: The Journey of ElainaElainaI am really enjoying Elaina’s adventures – in both light novel and anime form. The places that Elaina visits are all interesting, and Elaina is a fun character as well. I also appreciate that this show doesn’t steer away from darker themes.

That’s everything that I am watching for this season. At the beginning of the season I did consider adding a few more shows, but then I really got into Hololive EN… Oh well.
Lots of excellent stuff here regardless.

My top three shows: Love Live! Nijigasaki High School Idol Club, Adachi and Shimamura, and Wandering Witch: The Journey of Elaina. I think… maybe Assault Lily BOUQUET and Dropout Idol Fruit Tart can round that out to five.

An excellent season so far, and I look forward to what is to come.

Fall 2020 has been an excellent cap to what was a topsy turvy year of animation in Japan. Fortunately our patience paid off.
