In the fifth episode of Adachi and Shimamura, Adachi quite simply wants to ask Shimamura a question. Well, of course it isn’t that straightforward for Adachi. Shimamura also happens to notice that Adachi has been acting a little odd.

Adachi can’t stop thinking about Shimamura
This time around we are getting the adaptations of the second and third chapters of the second light novel: “Adachi’s Question” and “Abnormal ☆ Adachi” respectively. To boil the summary of this episode down to its simplest form, Adachi asks Shimamura a question.

Adachi just can’t bring herself to ask Shimamura a very specific question
Technically Adachi does ask Shimamura several questions in this episode, but they tend to be her actually avoiding what she really wants to ask. Yeah, Adachi is in full gay panic throughout the majority of this episode, and that is what makes it so enjoyable to watch.

Nagafuji and Hino just being normal friends
We also get another one the second light novel’s interludes adapted for this chapter, providing us a little more Hino x Nagafuji interaction. That particular scene pretty much plays out exactly the way it is described in the light novel, too.

So close…
Ask me for a single word to describe this episode (and the light novel chapters it adapts, I suppose), and I’d have to go for “almost”. There are things that just don’t quite happen, but come oh so close. Still, I really enjoyed this episode, so this anime must be doing something right.

You’d think Shimamura would realise this is a bad idea…
The first half of this episode is the adaptation of the “Adachi’s Question” chapter, which is told from Adachi’s point of view. “Abnormal ☆ Adachi” is told from Shimamura’s point of view, and that is carried over into the anime.
In particular, Shimamura narrates how she has noticed that Adachi has been acting strangely, and perhaps slowly starting to realise just why that may be. As to whether Shimamura’s feelings are mutual… well, we’ll just have to wait and see, I guess.

Adachi is so adorable when she is happy
It only took an entire episode to get the main point, but it was a journey that was very much worth watching. The anime adaptation has absolutely been doing the light novel justice, and that has continued with this episode.
Next time, we’ll see if Adachi plucking up her courage will pay off.
Good on Adachi getting the courage to ask Shimamura. I know how hard it can be. Boy do I know. Shimamura still overthinks things but we kinda get why she’s hesitant to open herself up to someone yet wanting to deep down.
NagaHino continue the tradition of glorious side-couples in yuri shows. My heart pounded hard during their scene.
