This month, the games I want to feature here are a few titles that are either heavily inspired by or remakes of retro classics. In particular, the main game I want to highlight takes us back to a time before Stardew Valley or even Farmville. The English title of the franchise has changed since then.
Before that, though, there are a handful of honourable mentions to be made.
First, the honourable mentions.
- Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon 2 – Koji Igarashi and Inti Creates return with the sequel to Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon. Put simply, it is a modern day “classicvania”.
- CrossCode – A 2D action RPG that is inspired heavily by retro games.
- Paper Mario: The Origami King – A new adventure unfolds for the paper-thin plumber. The comedy in these games tends to be great, so I’m looking forward to that.
That brings me to the main game that I want to highlight for this month.Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town is a remake of Game Boy Advance title Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town. The story remains the same: you arrive in Mineral Town having inherited your grandfather’s farm, and set to work restoring it to its former glory.
So you’ll be tending to crops, raising livestock and meeting all sorts of people. The people you meet include several eligible bachelors and bachelorettes – oh, and for the first time in the Story of Seasons franchise, same-sex marriage is possible. That includes back when it was known as Harvest Moon, too.
Being a farmer, you’ll be able to use the crops you grow and the produce from the animals you care for in cooking. Of course, you’ll want to sell said items, but they also have use as gifts, or restoring stamina so you can get even more farm work done.
I’ve always been partial to the Story of Seasons games, though I missed out on Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town the first time around. It wasn’t until the era of the Nintendo DS that my games collection started swelling massively, so whilst some people are pleased to revisit a favourite title from their childhood, this will be my first proper experience of Mineral Town.
Got some tough decisions ahead me of with Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town. Which female avatar to play as, what to name the farm and, most importantly, which lady to woo.
