A new decade brings along with it a new season of anime, so basically everything is still the same as normal. The winter 2020 season of anime seems particularly skewed towards musical anime, and that is fine with me. Well, the shows I’ve chosen to watch, at least.
As usual, here are my first impressions on each show I’ll be watching this season.Somali and the Forest SpiritOnly one episode in, and Somali and the Forest Spirit might already be the most the wholesome show of the season. Somali is such a fun character, and I very much look forward to seeing her adventures with her father figure, the golem. This show looks really nice, as well.
Asteroid in LoveGirls’ Club anime get off to a strong start for this decade with Asteroid in Love. We get a strong mutual attraction between Mira and Ao from the get-go, and a fun cast of characters. I’m particularly fond of Suzu, who seems to be a yuri fan.
Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side StoryIt doesn’t take Magia Record all that long to establish itself as part of the Puella Magi Madoka Magica universe, with its soundtrack and its Witch’s Labyrinths. Its first episode managed to surpass my expectations, and I hope that continues to be the case going forward.
Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken! has been called a love letter to animation, and the first episode provides pretty solid evidence for that. Animation can be an adventure, and that adventure is a heck of a lot of fun to watch. Definitely one of the strongest first episodes of this season.
ROOM CAMPNot much to say about ROOM CAMP other than it is short but sweet. A nice little distraction before we get to the second season of Laid-Back Camp.
BanG Dream! 3rd SeasonSome of my favourite girl bands return for the third season of BanG Dream!, which sees them aiming for the Budokan. Seems like Poppin’ Party, Roselia and RAISE A SUILEN will be the bands getting most focus. It is just a whole lot of fun seeing plenty of characters I adore animated.
BOFURI: I Don’t Want to Get Hurt, So I’ll Max Out My Defence.BOFURI is a whole lot of fun. Perhaps one of the funniest shows this season, or at least funniest premieres. I can’t wait to see what Maple’s vitality only build results in. Also, pretty eager to see her play the game alongside her friend.
SHOW BY ROCK!! Mashumairesh!!A fun start for SHOW BY ROCK!! Mashumairesh!!, if a little typical. The new band the show will be focusing on seem like a fun set of characters, and I’m sure there’s plenty of great music to come.
If My Favourite Pop Idol Made It to the Budokan, I Would DieI wasn’t entirely sold on the first episode of If My Favourite Pop Idol Made It to the Budokan, I Would Die, at least not until the final few moments of the episode. Idol fans can be kind of extreme, and that does give us some amusing moments.
A Certain Scientific Railgun TMisaka Mikoto returns for the third season of A Certain Scientific Railgun, which will be focusing on the Daihasei Festival. The first episode has introduced (and reintroduced) a few level 5 espers, setting things up for the arc to come.
22/7 (Nanabun No Nijyuuni)22/7 is off to quite an intriguing start, though I do think that perhaps Miu should be willing to communicate a little more with her own family, at least. This is an idol show, though it seems it might not be quite as straightforward as others. I am quite keen to see where this one goes.
That covers all the shows I’ll be watching this season, and I have to say I think the winter 2020 season is off to a brilliant start.
Somali and the Forest Spirit, Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!, Asteroid in Love, BOFURI and of course, BanG Dream! 3rd Season are probably the shows with the premieres I enjoyed most.
Plenty of musical shows this season as well, which I appreciate.
