I have finished reading through another light novel, and this time it is the third entry of Keiichi Sigsawa’s Sword Art Online Alternative Gun Gale Online series. As you can probably tell from the title, this light novel covers the conclusion of the second Squad Jam event.
A brand-new battlefield awaits!
The second Squad Jam plays out with Pitohui’s actual, real-world death on the line. The only way to prevent the most horrific outcome is for Llenn to kill Pitohui herself… Determined to engage in the battle, she teams up with her friend and recent ALfheim Online convert from back home, Miyu, hoping to take down all who stand in their way. As they race to reach Pitohui, Pitohui is madly obliterating enemy teams, almost as though she is enjoying the death game… Can Llenn save Pitohui before it’s too late?
2nd Squad Jam: Finish starts right in the middle of the 2nd Squad Jam event, picking up from where the previous light novel left off. Llenn and Fukaziroh have a simple plan: make a beeline straight for Pitohui so Llenn can kill her.
Of course, things are not that simple, as Team LF have to cross practically the entire map to get to their target, and there are also many other teams that they need to keep an eye out for.
As such, avoiding any conflict until they find Pitohui turns out to be impossible, but that does result in what Sword Art Online Alternative Gun Gale Online tends to do best: shootouts. It’s always an absolute pleasure reading about how Llenn tackles enemy opponents, and Fukaziroh’s addition just makes that all the more fun.
Particularly noteworthy are some of the more unconventional kills. They can be downright brutal; it’s just fortunate that they all take place in the game world of Gun Gale Online.
All the conflicts Llenn has to go through are merely buildup for that inevitable final confrontation with Pitohui. That confrontation alone is arguably the highlight of the second Squad Jam. I’ll just say that both Llenn and Pitohui go at each other with everything they got, and it’s a thrilling read from start to finish.
Llenn and Pitohui are the main attraction, but other teams such as SHINC and MMTM also put in some very noteworthy efforts.
Since the majority of this light novel takes place in GGO, it is very enjoyable. Everything that takes place in the game world tends to be a joy to read. There is a little bit in the real world, which does provide a rather neat moment.
This light novel ends with profiles of all the guns that the characters used – which naturally gives Sigsawa a chance to put his love for guns front and centre. It’s not just contained there, though – if there’s a chance to Sigsawa to go into even the slightest detail about any firearm, he seizes it.
After three volumes, that is just par for the course. I suspect that will continue to be the case in future volumes, too.
Sword Art Online Alternative Gun Gale Online, Vol. 3: 2nd Squad Jam: Finish is an excellent conclusion to GGO‘s second Squad Jam event, which features Llenn at her very best. Pitohui is no slouch either. I enjoyed reading through this light novel quite a lot.
