Autumn 2018 Anime: First Impressions

A new season of anime is upon us, which means a new first impressions post. Just like in previous first impressions posts, I’ll be sharing my initial thoughts of each show I have chosen to watch for this season. There isn’t anything more I can add here, so I’ll just dive straight in.The Girl in TwilightThe Girl in TwilightThe Girl in Twilight had a pretty interesting start. Seeing Asuka and her friends end up in another world reminded me a lot of Pure Illusion from Flip Flappers, and the fight scene had something of a Symphogear feel to it.
It has a very long way to go to even come close to being as good as Flip Flappers or Symphogear, but there has only been one episode so far. For what it’s worth, I did enjoy its first episode.

Between the Sky and SeaBetween the Sky and SeaI really quite like energetic, lively protagonists, and Haru from Between the Sky and Sea is one of them. The premise of fishing in space is… different, I guess.
The first episode gave us a rather unnecessary battle of the sexes thing, but hopefully now that is out of the way the show can focus on the main cast doing their thing. Probably the weakest start to a show I am watching this season.

Zombie Land SagaBroken necksThe first episode of Zombie Land Saga was something else. I went in not knowing what to expect, and came out with one of my favourite shows of this season. The reason for that is simple: I had a blast watching the first episode, which was totally absurd in the best possible way.

Bloom Into YouConfessionThe highly anticipated anime adaptation of Nio Nakatani’s Bloom Into You has started, and as a manga reader I am completely satisfied with the first episode. Whilst it is easy for the anime to be faithful to its source material at the beginning, I am curious to see if it can remain that way throughout the entire season.

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Golden WindJoJo's Bizarre Adventure Golden WindWe’re off to Naples for the fifth part of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, and the first episode introduces Giorno Giovanna. The show is definitely living up to its ‘bizarre’ mantle, with the couple of Stand powers we’ve seen so far being rather out there. I am eagerly anticipating the second episode, which is where we will discover what the ending theme is. If it was up to me, I’d pick ‘Stand’ by R.E.M. – but maybe that is too obvious.

Ms. Vampire who wives in my neighborhood.Ms Vampire who lives in my neighborhoodAs is tradition, I have also picked up a couple of cute girls doing cute things anime this season. Ms. Vampire who lives in my neighborhood. is one of them. This was an enjoyable first episode. It was cute and pretty amusing, and that is all I really ask for from these types of anime. Oh, and some yuri as well, which was delivered.

UzaMaid!UzaMaid!Well, there were certainly some very awkward moments in the first episode of UzaMaid! Aside from those, it was a decently amusing start. I’m hoping the awkward stuff was just a one off, but considering the type of show this could be… I’ll just have to wait and see.

Ace Attorney Season 2Ace Attorney Season 2Phoenix Wright – or Ryuichi Naruhodo, if you prefer – is back once more. The first episode covered the first case of the second game, Justice For All. With Phoenix suffering from amnesia, it served as reintroduction to the courtroom, and this episode pretty much serves the same purpose. Not one of the best cases in the games, but it was covered entirely in a single episode. Things should get better with the introduction of Godot in episode 2.

Fairy Tail (2018)Fairy Tail (2018)Fairy Tail returns with its final season (unless the sequel manga gets an anime adaptation), and we start with an episode that focuses on Wendy. Definitely grabs my attention right away, as Wendy is my favourite character in Fairy Tail. I also have things I would like to say about Wendy and Shelia (the two seen above), and the next episode is going to provide material for that.

Release the SpyceTsukikageOne of my most anticipated anime this season was Release the Spyce, and its first episode lived up to my expectations. We got some nice action scenes, as well as the introduction of the Tsukikage group. Can’t forget that this is another show that provided plenty of yuri as well.

Anima Yell!Anima Yell! This was a fairly enjoyable first episode of a girls’ club show. Not exactly breaking the mold, but the interactions between the characters did make me laugh, and there is the potential for some good cheerleading routines later on down the line.

HIMOTE HOUSE: A share house of super psychic girlsHIMOTE HOUSE A share house of super psychic girlsThis was… erm.. strange. I’m not entirely sure what was going on, but I liked it. I think. Not too keen on the after credits sequence, since it felt improvised or something like that. It just didn’t really click.
Aside from that, this was all right. I bet some people will take one look at the animation and immediately drop it, but I’m open minded when it comes to stuff like that.

I am also planning to watch Senran Kagura Ninja Flash: Shinovi Master, but that show airs pretty much a week after all the other shows listed. I’ll probably just tweet my initial impressions once it has aired.

So, having now watched the first episode of all the shows I chose to watch this season (except for Senran Kagura), I will now rank them from worst to best in my opinion. I did find at least a little bit of enjoyment in each show, so I won’t be dropping anything.

  • Between the Sky and Sea
  • HIMOTE HOUSE: A share house of super psychic girls
  • UzaMaid!
  • Ace Attorney Season 2
  • The Girl in Twilight
  • Fairy Tail (2018)
  • JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind
  • Anima Yell!
  • Ms. Vampire who lives in my neighborhood.
  • Bloom Into You
  • Release the Spyce
  • Zombie Land Saga

The list is strictly based on the first episode of each – I suspect it may shift around a bit by the time we reach the middle of the season. I’ve already mentioned that Senran Kagura will be added to my watch list when it starts, but I suspect it probably won’t even touch my top five of this season.

I’m still watching the usual suspects as well: Aikatsu Friends!, Attack on Titan Season 3, BORUTO: NARUTO NEXT GENERATIONS, Hugtto! PreCure and One Piece. The focus on this post was just the new shows starting for the autumn season, though.

So there were a couple of not so great starts, but those are just minor blips in what looks to be a fairly exciting autumn season of anime.

That’s a fairly busy watch list. I look forward to seeing your thoughts on the shows as the season progresses.
