Spring 2018 Anime Awards

Once again it is time for me to look back on a season of anime, and pick out some of my highlights. This time it is the spring 2018 season, and I will start with the list of shows that I watched.

  • Aikatsu Friends!
  • Amanchu! ~Advance~
  • Comic Girls
  • Crossing Time
  • Cutie Honey Universe
  • Hugtto! PreCure
  • Katana Maidens ~ Toji No Miko
  • Kiratto Pri☆chan
  • Lostorage conflated WIXOSS
  • Love To-LIE-Angle
  • Magical Girl Site
  • My Hero Academia Season 3
  • One Piece
  • Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online
  • Umamusume: Pretty Derby

There will potentially be spoilers for any of the shows listed above. With that warning done, let’s dive right in as I share what I enjoyed most from the spring 2018 season of anime.Best Opening Theme
“Ryuusei” by Eir Aoi

I’ll be honest here, I don’t think this season really had any stand out opening themes for me – if you asked me to think of one from the top of my head, I’d struggle to recall any. However, the opening theme for Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online may just be an exception to that rule. It’s good.
Runners-up: “Changing point” by iRis (Magical Girl Site); “Make Debut!” by Team Spica (Umamusume: Pretty Derby)

Best Concept
Horse Girl Races
UPDUmamusume: Pretty Derby is about horse girls racing each other, and the execution of said races is absolutely wonderful. The races are always thrilling, and it is never immediately obvious who will be claiming victory. It’s not just the races that are excellent; the obstacles characters have to overcome outside of their races makes for some compelling viewing.
Runners-up: Despair-filled card games (Lostorage conflated WIXOSS); Aspiring manga artists living together (Comic Girls)

Best Protagonist
LLENNLLENDon’t let her small and cute appearance fool you; LLENN is a vicious player killer in the VR game Gun Gale Online. She started playing the game because of her avatar, as she has a height complex in real life. She is known as the Pink Devil, and there is a very good reason for that.
Runners-up: Aya Asagiri (Magical Girl Site); Special Week (Umamusume: Pretty Derby)

Best Antagonist
NanaNanaAny of the Site Administrators would fit the bill here, but Nana is the one who gets the most screentime. She is incredibly creepy, and her casting is absolutely perfect.
Runners-up: Pitohui (Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online); All For One (My Hero Academia Season 3)

Best Female Character
Gold Ship
Gold ShipUmamusume: Pretty Derby has an extensive cast of characters, but one who managed to stand out above the others is Gold Ship. She always seems to be doing something amusing, and then there is her behaviour towards Mejiro McQueen. Gold Ship has a lot of fans, and it is easy to see why.
Runners-up: Ruru Amour (Hugtto! PreCure); Fukaziroh (Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online)

Best Male Character
All Might
All MightIn the third season of My Hero Academia, All Might ends up facing an opponent from his past. He barely pulled through before, but here he shows just why he became known as the Symbol of Peace. Even when his secret is revealed, All Might continues to be a hero.
Runners-up: Boruto Uzumaki (BORUTO: NARUTO NEXT GENERATIONS); Izuku Midoriya (My Hero Academia Season 3)

Best Cast of Characters
Manga ArtistsComic GirlsThe girls living in a dorm together in Comic Girls are all manga artists, some more successful than others. What makes them a particularly fun group of characters is the way that they tend to embody the specific genres they write. This gives us some pretty fun moments.
Runners-up: Magical girls (Magical Girl Site); Horse girls (Umamusume: Pretty Derby)

Cutest Character
Kaoruko Moeta/KaosKaosKaos is absolutely adorable, of that there is no doubt. She is met with constant failure, but she never gives up. She also has great taste.
Runners-up: LLENN (Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online); Tama (Lostorage conflated WIXOSS)

Most Badass Character
Angry LLENThere have been quite a few badass characters in this season, but LLENN might just be the pinnacle of them all. I’ve already mentioned she is known as the Pink Devil, but it seems that when she has an objective in mind she will stop at nothing in order to achieve it – as evidenced during her final fight of Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online.
Runners-up: Kanami Etou (Katana Maidens ~ Toji No Miko); Sayuki Ringa (Magical Girl Site)

Best Couple
Ruru Amour & Emiru AisakiRuru and EmiruFrom Hugtto! PreCure, these two have been absolutely spectacular. Ruru is an android who originally worked for the antagonists, but she switched sides. She has been coming to term with emotions, and that has happened with Emiru at her side. The two seemed like an unlikely couple at first, but they went on to develop a strong bond.
Runners-up: Aya Asagiri & Tsuyuno Yatsumura (Magical Girl Site); Kanami Etou & Hiyori Juujou (Katana Maidens ~ Toji No Miko)

Best Battle
LLENN vs. Pitohui
LLENN vs PitoThe confrontation between LLENN and Pitohui was inevitable, but damn, was it thrilling. It took LLENN a little while to get her head in the game, but once she did she zeroed in on her objective and gave us a fierce battle. Not even losing her weapons stopped her from achieving her goal.
Runners-up: All Might vs. All For One (My Hero Academia Season 3); Aya Asagiri vs. Sarina Shizukume (Magical Girl Site)

Best Finale
Dream Race
Team Spica
Umamusume: Pretty Derby ends with a race between most of the cast, meaning that Team Spica achieve their dream of all racing together. Of course, it is just as thrilling as the previous races, and the performance afterwards caps things off nicely.
Runners-up: Aya vs. Tsuyuno (Magical Girl Site); End of the despair (Lostorage conflated WIXOSS)

Best Ending Theme
“Believe it” by Love Me Tear

The ending theme from Aikatsu Friends! is incredibly catchy, and probably the one that I remember most out of all the ending themes from this season.
Runners-up: “To see the future” by Karen Kohiruimaki (Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online); “Zenzen Tomodachi” by Haruka Yamazaki (Magical Girl Site)

Best Anime
Hugtto! PreCurePreCure of LoveHugtto PreCure! has been an incredible viewing experience lately, and that is thanks to Ruru and Emiru. These two characters have been an absolute joy to watch, and seeing them develop as PreCure has been incredibly rewarding. It also helps that this particular season of PreCure has been touching upon some rather interesting topics. We’re not even halfway through Hugtto! PreCure yet, and it is already one of the best shows of this year.
Runners-up: Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online; Magical Girl Site

That wraps up the Spring 2018 Anime Awards… almost. There is one more thing that definitely deserves some recognition.

Best OVA
Kase-san and Morning Glories
Yamada & Kase Usually I’d keep the seasonal anime separate from OVAs, but I think in this case I’ll make an exceptional. The Kase-san OVA is truly a thing of beauty, and it is pretty much required viewing for anybody who calls themselves a fan of yuri. Check out the music video first, and watch the OVA after that. Pick up the manga as well – it is well worth it.

Now I am done. Quite an interesting season we had just had. See all at the end of the next season.
