It’s the end of the autumn season of anime for 2017, so it is about that time for me to look back over what I watched and hand out arbitrary awards based on my experiences with each show.
Here’s what I watched:
- BORUTO: NARUTO NEXT GENERATIONS
- Dragon Ball Super
- Girls’ Last Tour
- Himouto! Umaru-chan R
- Kino’s Journey -the Beautiful World- the Animated Series
- KiraKira ☆ PreCure a la Mode
- KONOHANA KITAN
- Land of the Lustrous
- Love Live! Sunshine!! Season 2
- One Piece
- UQ Holder!
- Wake Up, Girls! New Chapter
- Yuki Yuna is a Hero: The Washio Sumi Chapter/Hero Chapter
As is usually the case, be wary of potential spoilers for the shows listed above. Now, let’s just jump straight into it.
Best Opening Theme
“Ugoku, Ugoku” by Chito & Yuuri
The opening theme for Girls’ Last Tour is an incredibly catchy number. Fortunately, it also happens to be a fairly enjoyable song as well, so I don’t mind having it get stuck in my head.
Runners-up: “Aikotoba” by GARNiDELiA (Anime-Gataris); “Mirai no Bokura wa Shitteru yo” by Aqours (Love Live! Sunshine!! Season 2)
Yuki Yuna is a Hero: The Washio Sumi Chapter/Hero Chapter
Hmm, perhaps I should change this one to ‘Best Concept’… well, whatever. The Washio Sumi Chapter is a prequel to Yuki Yuna is a Hero, whilst Hero Chapter is a sequel. Either way, there is lots of suffering whilst girls just try to be heroes.
Runners-up: Girls’ Last Tour; Land of the Lustrous
The main protagonist of Land of the Lustrous is eager to be allowed to fight alongside their fellow games, but they aren’t exactly cut out for combat. Their personality quickly endeared me to them, though things do happen that causes a slight shift in Phos’ personality. However, their true self still remains, maybe just not as prominently after certain events.
Runners-up: Yuzu (KONOHANA KITAN); Chika Takami (Love Live! Sunshine!! Season 2)
Best Female Character
From URAHARA, Sayumi is there to offer support when the main trio are in need of it. She works at a crêpe shop, ensuring everyone is happy despite what Harajuku goes through.
Runners-up: You Watanabe (Love Live! Sunshine!! Season 2); Satsuki (KONOHANA KITAN)
Best Male Character
From BLEND-S, Akizuki is a chef at Café Stile. He is a lover of yuri and a keen gamer. His love of games results in him becoming a little closer to Kaho.
Runners-up: Kairi Sisigou (Fate/Apocrypha); Kōhei Matsuda (Wake Up, Girls! New Chapter)
Best Cast of Characters
Staff and Guests of Konohanatei
The characters in KONOHANA KITAN are a varied bunch, each with their own stories to tell. With Japanese folklore being prominent, there are more than a few fantastical creatures who visit the hot springs inn.
Runners-up: Aqours and supporters (Love Live! Sunshine!! Season 2); Jewel People (Land of the Lustrous)
KONOHANA KITAN‘s main character is also incredibly adorable. She also happens to be pretty good when it comes to motivational speeches, though she does have a habit of getting herself into some troublesome situations.
Runners-up: Ti (Kino’s Journey -the Beautiful World- the Animated Series); Misa Maruno (URAHARA)
Most Badass Character
The most badass moment of any shonen show is almost certainly when a character unlocks a new ability, and Goku is at it again – this time with Ultra Instinct. He doesn’t quite have it down at the time of writing, but he certainly has an impressive grasp on it.
Runners-up: Saber of Red (Fate/Apocrypha); Bort (Land of the Lustrous)
Yuzu and Satsuki
From KONOHANA KITAN, Yuzu pretty quickly grows fond of Satsuki after meeting her. Satsuki isn’t as open about her feelings towards Yuzu, but they are certainly there.
Runners-up: Ren and Natsume (KONOHANA KITAN); Caulifla and Kale (Dragon Ball Super)
Caulifla and Kale vs. Goku
Once again, Universe 6 squares off against Universe 7. Caulifla and Kale are able to push Goku right to the very limit, and then they fuse. Goku is pushed so far that he awakens Ultra Instinct again, and we get an epic bout between him and Kefla.
Runners-up: Rider of Red vs. Archer of Black (Fate/Apocrypha); Lancer of Red vs. Saber of Black (Fate/Apocrypha)
Love Live! Sunshine!! Season 2
The performances put on by Aqours throughout season 2 of Love Live! Sunshine!! were just incredible. It wasn’t always just Aqours, either; there was at least one collaboration with another school idol group.
Runners-up: Dragon Ball Super; Yuki Yuna is a Hero: The Washio Sumi Chapter/Hero Chapter
The final episode of Love Live! Sunshine!! Season 2 marked the end of an era. Still, Aqours fought hard to get to where they needed to be, and the finale relived several of those moments.
Runners-up: New Year (KONOHANA KITAN); History on the camera (Girls’ Last Tour)
Best Ending Theme
“Amadare no Uta” by Chito and Yuuri
This ending theme is a perfect match for Girls’ Last Tour; it is just so pleasant to listen to. Made even better with the sequence leading up to it in episode 5 with the rain.
Choosing just one favourite anime from this season is so hard. There have been some absolutely amazing shows, but I’ve got to go with the foxes of the hot springs inn. The stories it has to tell are amazing, and the characters are all fun too.
Runners-up: Love Live! Sunshine!! Season 2; Yuki Yuna is a Hero: The Washio Sumi Chapter/Hero Chapter
Whew, what a season it has been for anime. 2018 certainly has its work cut out for it if it wants to match the general quality we have had this year.
