Summer 2017 Anime: First Impressions Part 1

Crunchyroll kicked off the summer season of anime about a week earlier than I was expecting with the addition of Hina Logic – from Luck & Logic to their simulcast line-up. Considering that was one of the shows on my watch list, I’m not complaining.
Anyway, as usual, I’ll be sharing my first impressions for each show I’ll be watching during this season.
These first impressions will have been written immediately after I’ve seen the first episode of the series.
I think I’ll also split this post into two parts due to the timing of when everything airs.
Hina Logic – from Luck & Logic

Hina Logic - from Luck & Logic
Liones and Nina

To begin with, I felt that Hina Logic – from Luck & Logic‘s first episode was pretty enjoyable cute stuff, and then it got better when the girls revealed that pretty much possess magical girl powers. I don’t know much about the original Luck & Logic, but this first episode certainly has me very interested in seeing what more we’ll get from this one.

Symphogear AXZ

Symphogear AXZ

Hibiki has some new techniques, it seems

I got impatient with waiting for Symphogear AXZ to be subbed (considering Crunchyroll has the first 3 seasons, I’m hoping it gets this one as well) so I watched the raw version. I have a very limited understanding of Japanese, but that certainly didn’t mean I couldn’t enjoy the action – and Symphogear AXZ certainly delivers on that. I’m already in love with the fourth season, and I can’t wait to see what more it has in store for us.
I then watched it a second time with fansubs, and yep, I still love Symphogear to pieces. If Crunchyroll does end up getting it, then I’ll be left with no choice but to watch the first episode again.

Fate/Apocrypha

Fate Apocrypha

Saber of Red

I thought the first episode of Fate/Apocrypha was pretty good. We got some action as the Red and Black Factions clashed, with Saber of Red and Saber of Black getting to show off their respective Noble Phantasms. After that, it was pretty much just establishing the plot. I quite enjoyed what I saw, and look forward to seeing other Servants in action.

Battle Girl High School

Battle Girl High School

Miki Hoshitsuki

Almost immediately, Battle Girl High School‘s first episode was reminiscent of Schoolgirl Strikers. I didn’t find it particularly spectacular, but it wasn’t terrible either. I’ll be sticking with it, but it has a lot of work to do if it wants to be among my favourites of the season.

Netsuzou Trap -NTR-

Netsuzou Trap -NTR-

Yuma & Hotaru

Well this certainly was a thing. Episodes having a running length of less than 10 minutes might be a good thing for this particular series, though. I’m happy for more yuri, but I can certainly think of a few other titles that are more deserving of getting animated than this…
I’ll keep watching this one, but only because it’s supposed to be a “hot mess” and I want to see how bad it gets.
If Netsuzou Trap -NTR- does leave a bad taste in my mouth, I’ll be able to wash it out with the likes of Kase-san or Kindred Spirits on the Roof, I suppose.

That covers around half of the shows I’ll be watching this season. The shows I’ll be sharing my thoughts on in part 2 of this post are: Action Heroine Cheer Fruits, Made in Abyss, A Centaur’s Life, Princess Principal and NEW GAME!!.
I’m aware that fansubs are available now for NEW GAME!!, but they aren’t exactly up there in terms of quality. I would say that it’s likely Crunchyroll will get NEW GAME!!, so I’ll be holding fire on that one for the time being.
Should everything air as I expect it to, part 2 of my first impressions should be posted on or around July 11th.

  1. OG-Man says:

Hina Logi has been fun so far.

    Symphogear is still a godsend.

May watch Apocrypha at some point.

If BGHS has the yuri power of Ange Vierge and the storytelling of Schoolgirl Strikers then we’re good.

You won’t be disappointed by how messy NTR will get.
