Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid Episode 3: This World is Full of Trouble

This episode of Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid introduces a couple of new dragons. Before we get to that, Miss Kobayashi decides to do something about the lack of space that comes from living with two dragons.

cramped

Things are pretty cramped

Miss Kobayashi decides to move out, and takes Tohru and Kanna to look at several different places. Once she’s chosen a place, she has the dragons help her prepare things for moving out.

cleaning

Tohru sings a pretty interesting song whilst cleaning

Miss Kobayashi ends up asking Tohru about a dragon’s hygiene, and that conversation ends up turning to the places Tohru lived as a dragon.

kanna

This amuses me quite a bit

Continuing with the whole dragon hygiene thing, Tohru says that there was at least one time that she and Kanna would lick each other clean. This triggers quite an interesting image in Miss Kobayashi’s mind.

Miss Kobayashi might just be letting her imagination carried away here

Tohru then has a go at Miss Kobayashi for leaving her beer cans and clothes strewn about the place, as well as not keeping her books in order. Miss Kobayashi has a perfect retort to that – it’s pretty easy for her to manipulate someone who is head over heels for her. As the cleaning continues, the dragons and Miss Kobayashi end up finding themselves distracted by other things.

Miss Kobayashi finds some volumes of what I presume is a maid manga, and after that Tohru discovers a maid’s outfit. She gets Miss Kobayashi’s permission to try it on, though she does complain about the tight fit on the chest.

Tohru is a ‘D among dragons’

With everything packed away (which causes a bit of inconvenience), Miss Kobayashi and the dragons move into their new apartment. Once they arrive, Miss Kobayashi sorts the rooms out.

Tohru and Kanna are thrilled to be sharing their own room

Miss Kobayashi takes a bath, and Tohru seizes the opportunity to wash her back. They also talk about Tohru’s human form. Kanna joins them shortly after.

Following on from that, turns out Miss Kobayashi has moved in amongst some incredibly noisy neighbours. Being hungover, she sends Tohru to go and talk to them. Whilst music and drilling are more typical sources of noise, one of their neighbours makes a racket by cooking, of all things…

Tohru decides she should just kill them, but she quickly changes her mind when Miss Kobayashi suggests that they make compromises about when they’ll be making noise.

Tohru wants to know if being loud bothers Miss Kobayashi – she says that it is acceptable

I love these in-between sections

Next up, a gathering at Miss Kobayashi’s place so she can get out of flower-viewing with work. She invites Makoto, which Tohru says she’ll put up with. In exchange, Tohru says she will invite a couple of her dragon friends.

kanna-again

I’m going to put this out there: Kanna is the best

When the time for the gathering arrive, Miss Kobayashi comes home with Makoto. Tohru tries her best, but her contempt for the man is pretty obvious. Tohru’s guests arrive shortly after that.

fafnir

Meet Fafnir

We’ve heard Fafnir’s voice before, but this is the first time we’ve seen him (unless you’ve read the manga). Turns out he’s a shut-in.

quetzacotl

This is Quetzalcoatl, or Lucoa

Miss Kobayashi has some choice words about her outfit, as well as a couple of things that are rather big.

Fafnir and Makoto play a video game (presumably Dark Souls or something like that), whilst Miss Kobayashi talks with Quetzalcoatl. Quetzalcoatl mentions how Tohru seems to be smiling a lot more thanks to Miss Kobayashi, and it turns out that Miss Kobayashi feels the same way towards Tohru.

Here’s a shot of Quetzalcoatl with her eyes open

Miss Kobayashi ends up getting drunk, and we’ve already seen what that tends to entail in a previous episode. The episode ends with that.

I know it’s still pretty early on in the season, but Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid might just be my favourite show of the winter. A large part of this comes from Kanna’s contributions, though I have to say I’m pretty keen on the entire cast. As for this episode, that part where Miss Kobayashi admitted to Lucoa that Tohru makes her smile was sweet – though saying that, Tohru and Miss Kobayashi have had more than a single sweet moment together.
I already mentioned it in a caption up there, but I really like the little transitional scenes – Kanna finding somewhere comfortable to sleep was adorable and I laughed at Miss Kobayashi going back to her old apartment out of habit. Seeing Tohru and Kanna play a racing video game was entertaining, too.
Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid has a great mixture of both sweetness and humour, making it a whole lot of fun to watch.

  1. OG-Man says:

Kanna’s almost as lethal of a WMD as the nyanko. Tohru will make a great wife for Miss Kobayashi in the future. Lucoa is GLORIOUS and Mr Fafnir is amusing.

  2. The Otaku Judge says:

Surely their video game of choice should be Panzer Dragoon.
