Summer 2016 Anime: What I Will Be Watching

The next season of anime is rapidly approaching, so it’s about that time that I take a look at the shows that interest me. As ever, information comes from TV Tropes and AniChart. I’ve also included PVs where possible.

Amanchu!

A slice-of-life series about a girl who loves the ocean and discovers the joy of scuba diving. Due to air on July 8th and run for 13 episodes.
The PV seems quite laid back, and it seems we can expect some romantic two-girl friendship stuff as well.

Ange Vierge

An anime adaptation of a trading card game where three worlds become fused together and powers are awakened in teenage girls. Due to air on July 9th.
Going by the PV alone, I do have to say I like what I see. Is it just me, or does the music in the PV sound somewhat similar to Touhou‘s Septette for the Dead Princess at around the 28 second mark? Whether it’s just my imagination or not, I will say that I do like the music.

Fate/kaleid liner Prisma☆Illya 3rei!!

Another season of Fate with a magical girl twist. Due to air from July 6th.
I’m still of the opinion that the first season of Prisma☆Illya is the best one due to the greater focus on action. Apparently things get darker in this season, so that could be interesting.

Love Live! Sunshine!!

Spinoff/sequel of Love Live!, following a new group of girls living in a beach town.
By playing the Love Live! School Idol Project game on my phone, I’m actually familiar with a few Aquors songs and I think they’re pretty good. I’m looking forward to seeing these new characters interacting with each other, and whether any of them can prove to be equal to previous best girl Kotori.

Mahou Shoujo? Naria☆Girls
Three girls seek to become popular by creating a magical girl animation of themselves. Due to air from July 7th.
There’s not much information floating around for this one, but the concept is enough to intrigue me.

NEW GAME!

An anime about a high school graduate who joins the game company that produced her favourite game. Due to air from July 4th.
I think it would be neat if this ends up like Shirobako but with video games. I’m going to guess there’ll be far more ‘cute girls doing cute things’ stuff for this one, but that’s perfectly acceptable as well.

Regalia: The Three Sacred Stars

A mecha series with an all-female cast. Due to air from July 7th.
Another PV with enjoyable music, and I like the designs for the mechs. I don’t really know a lot about this, but I’ll definitely give it a shot.

Show By Rock!! Short!!
A series of shorts based on the Show By Rock! anime. Due to air from July 4th.
Just some Show By Rock!! goodness to fill the gap between seasons. I know the episodes will be shorts, but I’m sure they can manage to squeeze some Cyan x Retoree stuff in there – please?

Time Travel Girl
Also known as Time Travel Shoujo: Mari Waka to 8-nin no Kagakusha-tachi. A time travel series in which two high school girls called Mari and Waka travel through time and meet eight great scientists from the past: William Gilbert, Benjamin Franklin, Alessandro Volta, Michael Faraday, Samuel Morse, Graham Bell, Hertz and Thomas Edison. Due to air from July 9th for 12 episodes.
That’s about all the information I was able to pick up for this one, so I have no idea whether this will be something I stick with or not. Here’s hoping that Mari and Waka have an excellent adventure.

There’s also new seasons of Berserk and D. Gray-Man starting this season. Though I’m interested in both, I haven’t caught up with the previous stuff for either yet, so those will have to wait. Once I do, though, I shall be checking them out.

There’s also the shows I shall continue to be watching: Ace Attorney (assuming it’s a 2-cour show), Dragon Ball Super, One Piece, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable and Maho Girls PreCure!.

My most anticipated shows for this season are Prisma☆Illya 3rei!!, NEW GAME! and Love Live! Sunshine!!. Magical girls, video games and idols – three things I’m particularly fond of.
Mahou Shoujo? Naria☆Girls, Regalia: The Three Sacred Stars and Time Travel Girl are the shows I am curious about, simply due to a lack of information.
Of course, as ever, I may end up picking up other shows not mentioned here, or maybe even dropping something – these shows are the ones that piqued my interest the most.

Any new shows this season caught your interest? If so, feel free to leave a comment letting everyone know what you’re interested in and why.

  1. The Otaku Judge says:

I am hoping the new Berserk will be good and will keep an eye out on how Danganronpa plays out.

  2. OG-Man says:

All your top picks are on my watchlist as well.

The one that I watch that isn’t mentioned here is Qulidea Code…
If you see the promotional for this anime, you’ll notice that there are 3 couples, one of them is a yuri couple (the pony tail and twin tail one)…

Interesting note, the couple is written by Date A Live author, and while Date A Live is a harem series, from what I gather, the author has spoken in an interview that he is a yuri fan and originally Date A Live is supposed to be a yuri series, but his editor ask him to alter it because yuri don’t sell…

And for Qulidea Code, he cheat the project to make it has yuri…
The project is a multimedia project that include three notorious LN writer to write the story, one of them is the Date A Live author…
At first, he introduce the pony tail girl as a guy (and the illustrator also draw her in the first volume using his usual male face), but when second volume release (by this point already too far to be retracted), he reveal that the pony tail girl is actually a girl, and the whole thing has been yuri harem all along, and this continue with the anime having the couple as girl and girl couple…

So while I think the anime won’t mention this, I am confident we’ll get at least a substantial yuri sideshow from the anime…

      Some pretty interesting info here.
Since this will be on Crunchyroll, I’ll definitely check it out. Aoi Yuuki voicing one of the characters (Maihime Tenkawa) certainly ups my interest in it, too.
