All right, last weekend I took a break from looking at the Soul Eater manga in favour of Paradise Residence, but now I’m going back to the former – at least for this week.
The previous volume showed us the results of the growth of Maka and Soul, whilst giving some other characters some screentime with some pretty neat action scenes.
For this volume, Crona returns.
The chapters in this volume are sixty-eight to seventy-two, giving us a total of five.
As ever, let’s start with the blurb:
The enemy of my enemy is… still my enemy?! As the madness of the Kishin continues to threaten the world, Noah and Medusa race to find Asura and ally themselves with him. With Noah reliant on demon tools and Medusa on her experimental black blood, DWMA must devise ways to combat both evils while trying to seek and destroy Asura themselves!
Chapter 68 is called ‘The Abyss of Despair, the Uncleanliness and the Darkness’. At the beginning of the chapter we see Noah testing out a new demon tool, but it’s the confrontation between Black☆Star and Crona that is the main focus.
The three swords that Crona wields are what give this chapter its name. Of course, Medusa observes Crona’s fight against Black☆Star, though it isn’t too long before she has her own problem to deal with.
‘Love Triangle’ is the title of chapter 69. We see more of Medusa’s struggle against her opponent.
Black☆Star’s fight against Crona was also brought to an abrupt end, though he manages to take a hostage thanks to that little event.
This is the chapter where we also learn the name of Tezca Tlipoca, the Death Weapon who was sent to spy on Medusa during the Baba Yaga Castle stuff.
Elsewhere, Soul receives many requests from other meister girls to become their partner, despite the fact that Maka was the one who made him into a Death Weapon.
The chapter ends with Gopher torturing Kid, though it’s Gopher’s appearance that causes Kid the most distress rather than physical pain.
Chapter 70 is called ‘The Business Lunch’. The DWMA teachers and Shinigami come together for a meeting to discuss the rescue of Kid. Maka and Soul try spying to find out what’s going on, whilst Black☆Star returns from his mission and literally kicks the door down…
‘The Great Old One’ is the name of chapter 71. The meeting about Kid’s rescue actually gets serious until Black☆Star walks in and drops his hostage right in front of Shinigami.
Kid ends up back inside the Book of Eibon, and we see that Noah keeps some rather… eldritch beings in there.
The title of chapter 72 is ‘Salvage (Part 1)’. Yep, we’re getting another major arc and it’s starting right here.
Maka, Soul, Black☆Star, Tsubaki, Liz, Patty, Kilik, Fire and Thunder make up Kid’s rescue party. With a little help, they are able to enter the Book of Eibon.
Naturally, they start at the prologue, where they meet the ‘Table of Contents’. It serves as a guide through the Book.
The first chapter of the Book of Eibon is ‘Lust’, where rule 63 is in full effect – that is, all the characters get genderswapped.
Deeper in the Book, Kid converses with the eldritch creature… and it has quite the effect on him.
As ever, Soul Eater continues to be enjoyable. Crona’s new abilities were certainly interesting to see, though Black☆Star proved that he wouldn’t be outmatched.
We also get preparation for the next major arc, as well as its start – the Book of Eibon is certainly an interesting place, with chapters devoted to the seven deadly sins.
Next time, the Kid rescue group goes further into the Book of Eibon.
