For the last time in 2015, it’s the end of a season of anime which means I get to hand out some more arbitrary awards, completely based on my own personal tastes. I wasn’t too keen on the season at the start, and though there has been some good shows, I still feel as if this season was the weakest of this year. Still, we’re here to celebrate the good stuff.
I should probably let you know what shows I watched for the season. As ever, be wary of potential spoilers for the following shows that are listed:
- Anime de Training! Ex
- Aria the Scarlet Ammo AA
- Attack on Titan: Junior High
- Dragon Ball Super
- Fairy Tail Series 2
- Go! Princess PreCure
- Hackadoll the Animation
- Is the Order a Rabbit??
- Komori-san Can’t Decline
- Magical Somera-chan
- Miss Monochrome – The Animation – 3
- One Piece
- One Punch Man
- Valkyrie Drive: Mermaid
- Yuru Yuri Season 3
With that done, let’s get down to business.
Best Opening Theme
“THE HERO !! ~Okoreru Kobushi ni Hi wo Tsukero~” by JAM Project
The opening theme for One Punch Man is easily my favourite this season by a wide margin. Whenever JAM Project are involved, you know you’re about to hear something hot-blooded, and this is no exception. A great tune.
Runners-up: “Bull’s Eye” by nano (Aria the Scarlet Ammo AA); “Overdrive” by Hitomi Harada (Valkyrie Drive: Mermaid)
One Punch Man
A hero who can defeat any enemy with a single punch. Surely this couldn’t be interesting, right? Wrong – Saitama has become disillusioned due to his immense physical prowess, which arose from just wanting to be a hero. Now he seeks a worthy opponent, whilst joining the Hero Association so he can be officially recognised as a hero. There’s a lot more than just a man able to defeat any enemy with a single punch here.
Runners-up: Valkyrie Drive: Mermaid; Aria the Scarlet Ammo AA
Though he may not be the sharpest tool in the shed, One Punch Man‘s Saitama has almost no equal in physical strength. He’s also rather apathetic, and that’s what earns him this award.
Runners-up: Mirei Shikishima (Valkyrie Drive: Mermaid); Akari Akaza (Yuru Yuri Season 3)
The main antagonist of Valkyrie Drive: Mermaid. She doesn’t show up until the latter half, but she quickly proves to be a force to be reckoned with.
Runners-up: Mard Geer (Fairy Tail Series 2); Boros (One Punch Man)
Best Cast of Characters
Yuru Yuri Season 3
Yuru Yuri is easily one of the finest cute girls doing cute things series there is, and that’s thank to its varied cast. They bring plenty of humour along with the cute and yuri moments.
Runners-up: Is the Order a Rabbit??; Valkyrie Drive: Mermaid
Sakurako’s youngest sister in Yuru Yuri. Honestly, both she and Mari could have won this award, but I had to choose one. Of course, when both are on screen together… very adorable.
Runners-up: Mari Funami (Yuru Yuri Season 3); Chino Kafuu (Is the Order a Rabbit?)
Most Badass Character
He can destroy his foes with a single punch – this has left him dissatisfied, however. Still, anyone who can do that definitely deserves some recognition.
Runners-up: Mirei Shikishima (Valkyrie Drive: Mermaid); Gray Fullbuster (Fairy Tail Series 2)
Mamori Tokonome & Mirei Shikishima
Yuru Yuri had plenty of contenders for this one, but none of the couples in that were quite as… ahem, ‘hands-on’ as these two were. Even better is that the mature looking Mirei is actually the younger of the two. Mirei is very stoic, but she comes to realise her feelings in the end.
Runners-up: Kyouko Toshino & Ayano Sugiura (Yuru Yuri Season 3); Raika Hino & Kirin Shima (Aria the Scarlet Ammo AA)
Saitama vs. Boros
The final battle of One Punch Man, and it has Saitama go up against a foe he is unable to defeat with a single punch. The opening theme plays during their battle, making it so much more awesome. All the battles in One Punch Man are spectacular, but this finale was definitely the best of the lot.
Runners-up: Natsu Dragneel & Gray Fullbuster vs. Mard Geer (Fairy Tail Series 2); Son Goku vs. Golden Freeza (Dragon Ball Super)
One Punch Man
With an incredible opening theme by JAM Project, One Punch Man lets you know right away that the soundtrack will be incredible. Of course, the music that plays throughout the show proves to be very good, too.
Runners-up: Valkyrie Drive: Mermaid; Fairy Tail Series 2
One Punch Man
Saitama vs. Boros is my favourite fight, and yep, it’s my favourite finale too – though a fair few Heroes were involved in this, with my personal favourite being Tornado. Still, One Punch Man ended on a spectacular note, leaving it open enough for a second season.
Runners-up: Valkyrie Drive: Mermaid; Yuru Yuri Season 3
Best Ending Theme
Tokimeki Poporon♪ by Chimame-tai
The ending theme for Is the Order a Rabbit??, as sung by Chino, Mayu and Megu, tastes like diabetes. Also somewhat interactive, with a game of rock-paper-scissors played towards the end of the theme.
Runners-up: Pulse by Team AA (Aria the Scarlet Ammo AA); Ultra Super Hyper Miracle Romantic by Mirei Shikishima and Mamori Tokonome (Valkyrie Drive: Mermaid)
One Punch Man
My favourite anime of the season was the one about the ‘Caped Baldy’. Originally starting out as a badly drawn webcomic, Saitama and the other Heroes have really come a long way. For the record, my favourite Hero is Tornado (or Tatsumaki if you’re going by Japanese names), purely because she is voiced by Aoi Yuuki. Still, a really good anime, and I strongly recommend watching it if you enjoy superhero stuff.
Runners-up: Yuru Yuri Season 3; Valkryie Drive: Mermaid
That’s it for this year. One Punch Man is really good, and I’m going to hope for a second season. Valkyrie Drive: Mermaid was a decent surprise, and Yuru Yuri‘s third season delivered. It’s also worth mentioning Is the Order a Rabbit??, which was an improvement over the first season.
Not the greatest season of 2015, but had some really enjoyable shows nonetheless.
