Autumn 2015 Anime: Thoughts So Far

Since it is more or less the middle of the Autumn season of anime,  I’ll be sharing my thoughts on everything I’ve been watching. With that, let’s get into it.

Anime De Training! Ex
This has just been girls doing various exercises whilst directly talking to the viewer. The latest episode had three of the girls together, as opposed to just one like the first few episodes. I guess this anime does what it sets out to do – it’s difficult to say much about these short-form series…

Aria the Scarlet Ammo AA
The best part about this has been the character interactions – the action scenes have been all right, but not much more. Next episode could have some potential though – I love a good swordfight.

Attack on Titan: Junior High
Well, this is utterly silly. Shame that many of its jokes are just moments that are pretty much repeated from the source material – there are a couple of original gags in there, though. Many of the characters are exaggerated, though there are some that make little sense – such as Armin being afraid of the cold.

Dragon Ball Super
The retelling of the Battle of Gods I found to be fairly enjoyable, and it has now moved on to Resurrection “F”. We actually get to see more of Goku and Vegeta training under Whis’ tutelage, which is nice.
Also, two new characters have been introduced – Champa and Vedos (pretty much fat Beerus and female Whis respectively). They’ve only appeared briefly, but I’d guess at them being the next major enemies after the return of a particular tyrant…

Fairy Tail Series 2
The Tartaros arc continues, with the return of one of Fairy Tail’s greatest adversaries and a reunion between father and son. It’s been fun to watch so far, I’m looking forward to seeing the conclusion of the arc.

Go! Princess PreCure
Some genuinely surprising events have happened in this, but I won’t spoil things here. Still, this is proving to be a fairly strong iteration of the Pretty Cure franchise that has been enjoyable so far.

Hackadoll the Animation
Pretty much a show about cute girls doing silly things. It isn’t too bad, but it doesn’t really have anything that makes it stand out compared to other shows with the same premise.

Is the Order a Rabbit??
I’m enjoying this second season more than the first, possibly due to Chino’s school friends playing a larger role. Mocha, Cocoa’s sister, is definitely also a welcome addition to the cast – I look forward to seeing more from her.

JK-MESHI!
Though the animation is somewhat limited on this one, I find the conversations between the girls and how they prepare their meals to be quite interesting to watch.

Komori-san Can’t Decline
It’s difficult to say much about a show that only has episodes that are 2 minutes long… it’s all right, I guess. It won’t set the world on fire, and I’m not too keen on the character designs.

Magical Somera-chan
Possibly the most surreal series of shorts this season – the original manga is by the same person responsible for Ai Mai Mi, so that isn’t really a surprise. Don’t really have much else to say – if you’re into weirdness, this is worth checking out.

Miss Monochrome – The Animation – 3
I feel like the third season has gotten more surreal. Don’t really have much else to say – it’s enjoyable enough for what it is.

One Piece
Guess what? Yep, still on the Dressrosa arc. Doflamingo, Trebol and Pica still stand at present – the other enemies have slowly but surely been defeated. It’s taken a while, but watching the battles between Doflamingo’s subordinates and everyone else has actually been fairly enjoyable though I would say that the best is yet to come – Pica vs. Zoro and Luffy vs. Doflamingo.

One Punch Man
I’m really enjoying this so far. Made even better with the debut of the S-class Hero Tornado, who sounds exactly like Symphogear‘s Hibiki Tachibana – of course, the reason for that is simple; both are voiced by Aoi Yuuki.
Regardless, One Punch Man is actually really quite good. I’m glad I decided to give it a go.

Valkyrie Drive: Mermaid
Well, this is certainly a thing. For what it is, this has actually been surprisingly good. Mirei is definitely a great character, and hopefully Mamori will get over that whole Akira thing… Talking of Akira, it’s very likely that ‘he’ is actually a she. Still, Valkyrie Drive has certainly had some surprises and I’m actually looking forward to what else it has in store.

Yuru Yuri Season 3
More Yuru Yuri is never a bad thing, and this just proves that. Definitely one of the best ‘girls club’ series out there. The humour is spot-on, and the characters are as fun to watch as ever. There’s also been plenty of moments between the various pairings, which are always welcome.

That’s covered everything. Reviewing the various short series of anime at the end of the season is going to be a challenge – there really isn’t much to say about them, and giving them a score out of ten just feels arbitrary. Maybe I just won’t bother with a score if the running time for each episode is less than 15 minutes…
Not that giving traditional 24-minute or so length a score is not arbitrary, it’s just there’s a lot more content to talk about so giving them a score is actually easier.
Anyways, Yuru Yuri is living up to my expectations, Is the Order a Rabbit?? has definitely improved, Valkyrie Drive: Mermaid is actually pretty good and One Punch Man is great. This season is definitely more about comedy than anything else, and the four aforementioned shows all have the potential to be in my top three at the end of the season.
