Nintendo have set up a ballot for Smash Bros. where you can suggest fighters to join the already extensive cast of Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U. Just for fun, I thought I’d share some of my ideas of characters I would like to see in the games.
Firstly, let’s take a look at characters who already exist in the game as Assist Trophies, or just normal trophies.
The protagonist of The Mysterious Murasame Castle, a NES game that was only released outside of Japan relatively recently via Virtual Console. He makes an appearance as an Assist Trophy in the game, but it seems that he could have been a fully playable character. This seems a pretty compelling reason for his inclusion.
We already have a 2D fighter in the shape of Mr. Game & Watch, so why not add another? Paper Mario could use his ability to fold his body for his attacks, and his Final Smash could have him turn into his giant 8-bit form just like in Super Paper Mario.
We’ve got Donkey and Diddy, so why not add a third Kong to the mix? She could use her ponytail to attack, with her recovery move having her use it like she can in the games – spinning it to fly for a short while.
He’s playable in Hyrule Warriors, and he has various techniques that could serve as his special moves. Err… yeah, moving swiftly on.
The original evil in the Legend of Zelda series. He could fight similarly to Ganondorf, or he could actually use the sword he wields and not just for custom moves. I think seeing more villains in the roster would be pretty neat.
Sigh… I get the feeling Ridley will be suggested quite a bit. I’m perfectly content with him remaining as a stage hazard, but if he does happen to get playable status, I won’t complain.
If Wolf does return as a playable character in Smash Bros., I hope it is with a new Final Smash. I personally won’t be making this suggestion any time soon, but I know there are fans of Wolf out there who would love to see him back.
My favourite character from Xenoblade Chronicles. She has a wide range of elemental magic available to her, and she could also use a chain attack as her Final Smash. To be fair, I would love to see more characters from Xenoblade Chronicles become playable alongside Shulk, but Melia is my top pick.
Technological constraints of the 3DS prevented this pair from returning. However, why not have Popo and Nana fight as single characters, using alternate costumes to switch between them?
Being the star of a platformer series, I think Rayman would fight right in with the rest of the cast. His limbless form could serve up some potentially interesting attacks.
He may not be powerful on his own, but with a team of one hundred backing him up, Wonder-Red would be an awesome addition to the roster. Obviously his Final Smash would involve all one hundred of those allies performing a combination attack.
This would be Knuckles as he appeared in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, not that Sonic Boom thing… Keep it traditional, and I would welcome the addition of this echidna.
He appears as part of Mega Man’s Final Smash, but X has plenty of different abilities he could use in a similar manner to the Blue Bomber.
Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars proved that this household robot is capable of fighting, so why not have her participate in another fighting game? Her moves could all be adapted from Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars.
Another character from the Mega Man franchise. He too appeared in Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars, though those who know him are aware of his fighting ability. He is able to use different weapons throughout the Mega Man Zero games, so that could be reflected in his appearance.
Next, characters from previous Smash Bros. games.
No, not the Koopaling… Roy debuted in Super Smash Bros. Melee, and was part of the reason that Fire Emblem games started being released outside of Japan. I think his moveset would need to be changed so he isn’t just another Marth clone.
With attacks that injured itself, Pichu was very much a joke character in Melee. I think it should return, just so expert players can humiliate others by defeating them with a suicidal electric rat.
Instead of having him be a clone of Link, let him use the masks he collected in Majora’s Mask. Obviously the Fierce Deity Mask would be his Final Smash, and maybe he could change form as he fights.
Personally, I’m not particularly bothered about Snake. Still, it seems that there are those who would like to see him return once more. For me, there are other Konami characters that are I would prefer to see.
Right, up next are characters who have appeared on Nintendo’s consoles, and ones from future releases.
This one seems like a no-brainer. Splatoon is Nintendo’s next major IP, and there are already amiibo for the Inklings. Seriously, this one should just happen.
A half-genie from Sequin Land. Using her genie powers, she is able to assume different forms with different powers. Her hair is also her main weapon, whipping it back and forth to defeat enemies.
A knight that wields a shovel. His special attacks could be based on his subweapons.
One of the many protagonists of Castlevania. With his whip and subweapons, I reckon Simon Belmont could comfortably fit in with the cast of Smash Bros.
Probably a long shot, but hey, you never know. This witch has a variety of weapons available to her, though I imagine her Wicked Weave would need to be toned down somewhat…
From Cave Story, this character could use his different weapons for his special attacks. Maybe have him team up with Curly Brace for his Final Smash.
Protagonist of Tales of Symphonia. He wields two swords, and has a large range of techniques that could be adapted as special moves.
During my school years, many a lunchtime was spent playing Bomberman on DS with my friends. Those were some fun sessions, and I would certainly like to see Bomberman return once more.
Protagonist of Chrono Trigger. In addition to his sword skills, he can also use lightning magic. A Double or Triple Tech could serve as his Final Smash, similarly to Robin’s Pair Up or Shulk’s Chain Attack Final Smashes.
Ray Mk III
Basically a customisable robot for battling. This franchise has sort of fallen off the radar, so having a Custom Robo as DLC for Smash might reinvigorate some interest in it.
One of the protagonists from Golden Sun. He was an Assist Trophy in Brawl. Another sword-wielding character, this time with Venus Psynergy – or earth-based magic for those of who have no idea what I’m going on about.
Okami‘s lupine protagonist. Brush techniques would serve as her special attacks. I’d also be happy with Chibiterasu from Okamiden.
Maybe his moves could be based on puzzles? He’s pretty handy with a sword, too.
This wouldn’t be the Ace Attorney’s first appearance in a fighting game. Not entirely sure what his moveset would actually be, and the idea of seeing him double jump seems utterly absurd to me…
Pirates are pretty great, and when they have no sea to sail, they sail the skies. Skies of Arcadia‘s protagonist would be a character I would welcome to the roster – I also need to actually finish Skies of Arcadia Legends…
Okay, this list got a lot longer than I had anticipated it would. The only ideas I have left are characters who have no history appearing on Nintendo consoles.
I’d be interested to know who you would suggest for Smash Bros., as too would the people who created it. Let me know, and visit the Smash Bros. Fighter Ballot Page to share your idea.
