Rory’s Wii U Game of February 2015

My Wii U Game of the Month for February is one that is available via both the Wii U and 3DS eShops. The game is an exploration-driven platformer that is the third entry in its series, featuring the protagonist teaming up with an old rival.

Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse is the third entry in the Shantae series of games developed by WayFoward Technologies. First was Shantae on the Game Boy Color, followed by the DSiWare title Shantae: Risky’s Revenge.

Shantae doesn’t have access to her genie powers in this entry of the series, but that doesn’t stop her from working to defend Sequin Land when it comes under threat. Things kick off when the Ammo Baron invades Scuttle Town and claims it as his own.
After that event, Shantae finds herself teaming up with her nemesis Risky Boots in order to try and prevent the return of the Pirate Master.

During the course of her adventure, Shantae gains various Pirate Gear that bestows upon her different abilities. These abilities can be used to reach new places and find secrets and such.
Shantae retains her ability to attack enemies by whipping them with her hair, too. A wide range of items are available as well, including items for healing and offence. The items don’t rely on magic this time, but you may find yourself running out if you use them carelessly.

The Shantae series is an enjoyable one, and I’ve enjoyed what I have played of this game so far. I’m also looking forward to the next entry in the series, Shantae: Half-Genie Hero.
