My Wii U Game of the Month for November is one that is available on both 3DS and Wii U eShops. This particular game pays homage to the games of the NES area, whilst using modern technology to polish the experience.
As anyone who read my Nintendo Direct post knows, the game is Shovel Knight. The eponymous knight is the hero of the game. Shovel Knight’s adventure has him challenge The Order of No Quarter, in an attempt to battle a villain known as the Enchantress. There is also the matter of the disappeared Shield Knight.
Director Sean Velasco has stated that the games draw heavy influence from NES games – Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse, DuckTales, Super Mario Bros. 3 and the Mega Man series. Just playing this game makes all these influences extremely apparent.
Several updates for Shovel Knight are due out in the future, and these range from playable stories for King Knight, Specter Knight and Plague Knight to a mode that swaps all the characters’ genders.
Most of the music was created by Jake Kaufman, though there were two contributions by Mega Man composer Manami Matsumae. The soundtrack is impressive.
As far as debut games go, Yacht Club Games’ Shovel Knight is pretty damn good. I shall be keeping an eye on their work in the future, and you should too.
