So, the Autumn 2014 Anime Season has officially started. So far, four shows I’m interested in have aired their first episode (well, one of them was technically episode zero, but whatever…). One of the shows didn’t make a good first impression, but the other three more than make up for that.
selector spread WIXOSS
The dark anime about girls playing card games returns. Everything starts all cheery, but we quickly get to see that Ruko is still recovering from what happened at the end of the previous season.
It seems we’ll be seeing more of Chiyori, who only got a brief appearance before as well. She seems to possess quite a bit of knowledge about WIXOSS, thanks to a novel. I definitely look forward to seeing if Ruko can achieve her goal, and whether Iona will help or hinder her with that.
Log Horizon Season 2
The opening theme is still the same, and I am happy for that. Shiroe decides to leave Akihabara in order to find a solution to the Round Table Conference’s financial problems. It seems he’s going to have a quite an adventure ahead of him. Also, I’m curious about the final scene of the first episode; Shiroe and Akatsuki failed to do something, but that isn’t elaborated on.
Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works
Yep, so the Fate series returns once again. This time it focuses on the Unlimited Blade Works route from the Fate/stay night visual novel. The focus is on Rin Tohsaka and her servant Archer. We got to see a fight between Archer and Lancer, and it was great. Everything else was to set up the beginning of the story, but what would you expect from ‘Episode 0: Prologue’? I’m certainly looking forward to seeing how this one does compared to the brilliant Fate/Zero.
Cross Ange: Rondo of Angels and Dragons
I have a feeling the first episode of this isn’t really indicative of what it is actually about. We got to see Ange, and she learned that she was a ‘Norma’ – people who are universally hated by mana-using humans.
The final scene of the episode was not a pleasant one… I hope we get to see more mechs vs. dragons, like shown at the beginning of the episode. Going by first impressions alone, I’m don’t think I’m going to enjoy Cross Ange: Rondo of Angels and Dragons as much as selector spread WIXOSS, Log Horizon or Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works.
So, three out of four ain’t bad. Of course, things might improve or get worse as the season continues. For now, I’ve got at least three shows I know I will enjoy, and one that still has a chance to improve.
There are still a few more shows that I intend to watch this season as well, so keep an eye out in the near-future for more first impressions of shows from the Autumn 2014 Anime Season.
