My Wii U Game of the Month for September is a crossover title. It features the gameplay of Dynasty Warriors with the characters and places from a legendary Nintendo series.
If you hadn’t guessed already, that ‘legendary Nintendo series’ is none other than The Legend of Zelda. My game of the month is Hyrule Warriors.
Though the gameplay isn’t standard Zelda fare, all the other elements are present. Link begins the game as a trainee soldier, eventually proving his worth as a hero. However, this time Link isn’t alone.
Impa, Midna, and Fi step up to lend a hand, amongst a few others as well. These characters are all playable, with future add on content increasing the roster in the not-too-distant future.
Amongst the familiar allies and enemies are a few new characters. Lana is an original character, and the big bad is a sorceress named Cia. Other new villains include Wizzro and Volga, both characters whose names bare resemblance to foes that Link has encountered before.
The reason behind the coming together of the various Zelda characters is Cia’s doing. She opens portals through time and space, which connects the worlds of Ocarina of Time, Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword. This story is told through Legend Mode.
Free Mode allows players to replay battles from Legend Mode, offering a chance to collect any items that may have been missed first time around.
The game also features Adventure Mode, which contains the entire map of the first Legend of Zelda game. Each screen has its own battle with differing rules and restrictions. Clearing these battle will earn new weapons, new characters and item cards. Item cards can be used on the map to uncover secrets in order to acquire more rewards for completing battles.
For Zelda fans, there is a lot of things that they will appreciate. Each character has their own 8-bit sprite in Adventure Mode, and the music is brilliant. Even the loading screen is great.
There are familiar items for use in battle as well. Classic Zelda items which can be used to great effect on certain bosses or uncovering hidden treasures.
There’s already a fair bit going on in Hyrule Warriors, but Nintendo have add-on content due out in the future. This will feature new Adventure Mode maps, characters, weapons and costumes. There is an option to buy that stuff in advance, which allows players to use a Dark Link costume straight away. Everything else is due to be released over the coming months.
When it comes down to it, Hyrule Warriors is a celebration of The Legend of Zelda. It’s well worth checking out, even if you’ve never played a Dynasty Warriors game.
