Rory’s Wii U Game of July

My Wii U Game of the Month for July is one that is based on a certain popular long-running manga. It is an action/adventure game that was actually released at the end of June in Europe.

That long-running manga? It’s One Piece, which makes my Game of the Month for July One Piece Unlimited World Red. The Straw Hat Pirates arrive at a place called Trans Town, where Luffy runs off in pursuit of food. Whilst that happens, the other Straw Hats get themselves captured, leaving their captain to save them.
All nine of the Straw Hats are playable (you have to rescue them first), though some circumstances do require the player to control other characters from the world of One Piece, including Trafalgar Law and Portgas D. Ace.
Talking of characters, there are two new ones designed by One Piece‘s mangaka Eiichiro Oda; Pato and Red. Pato is a tanuki, whilst Red seems to be the big bad of the game.

During their adventures, the Straw Hats can pick up items that can be used for the development of Trans Town, allowing to build a tavern, pharmacy and other such buildings. In turn, this provides the Straw Hats with items that will aid them on their quests.
The quests vary, from collecting herbs to defeating bosses. There are also Boss Quests, available for completing certain objectives in the Coliseum.

Story-wise, Luffy and Law enter the Coliseum in order to get to Donquixote Doflamingo, though there are a whole host of playable characters besides them. Several familiar villains also appear as foes, such as Caesar Clown and Rob Lucci.
Turns out the Coliseum mode is somewhat addictive. My brother and I have been enjoying our time playing it, unlocking characters as we advance ever closer to fighting Doflamingo.
