Rory’s 3DS Game of March

My 3DS Game of the Month for March is a title which was released over here in the UK on the 28th February. The game got both a physical and digital release, unlike America, which only got the latter. The game features two groups of female ninjas from two opposing schools.

The game is Senran Kagura Burst. I have mentioned this game in a previous post, when the European box art was confirmed. It has received mixed reviews, but I’m finding it fairly enjoyable.
There are two stories available in the game. Both are available as soon as you start it up. The game recommends the Hanzō Academy story for your first play, so that is what I have started with. It focuses on the characters Asuka, Ikaruga, Katsuragi, Hibari and Yagyū. The other story focuses on the girls from the Hebijo Clandestine Girls’ Academy; Homura, Yomi, Hikage, Mirai and Haruka.
Senran Kagura Burst is a sidescrolling action game. It is split into three parts; novel, adventure and action. The novel parts reveal backstories and plot points, adventure is basically the main hub and action is where all the combat happens.

To begin with, there are two fighting styles available for all characters. They are ‘Yin’ and ‘Yang’.
‘Yin’ style is achieved by having your character strip down to her swimsuit, thus sacrificing defence for offence. This allows endless combos and prevents Limit Breaks from consuming HP.
‘Yang’ style is achieved by keeping your character’s school uniform on or using Ninja Transformation. This provides higher defence, better combos and the Ninja Art Gauge will rise quicker, thus giving easier access to Secret Arts.
By maxing out a character’s Yin and Yang meters, they will then get access to the Flash style.

There is a sequel in development for the 3DS, entitled Senran Kagura 2: Shinku. It is due out in Japan in August. Who knows, maybe we’ll see that released outside of Japan in the distant future?

The Senran Kagura anime has been licensed in North America by Funimation Entertainment, but there has been no word of a UK release yet.
